There is an easy way to count how many "drinks" you're having. One "drink" is an arbitrary amount of alcohol, but it's the same for every type of beverage.
12 ounces of a 5% alcohol beer.
5 ounces of a 12% alcohol wine.
See that pattern? It's magic. You multiply the ounces and the % and get .60. That's a drink.
1.5 ounces of a 40% alcohol liquor.
That goes for any mixed drink. You should put in 1.5 ounces of hard booze, and either shoot it or mix it with whatever you want.
All of these count as 1 drink.
If you have a 40, if it's actually malt liquor (8% alcohol), that's 5 drinks. But if it's 40 ounces of 12% alcohol beer, it's 3 1/3 drinks.
You can dance between liquor and beer as long as you don't start drinking the liquor as fast as you drink the beer. Keep these numbers in mind, and you will become a successful drunk like the best of us.
Good luck and godspeed.
