The main reason is because Halo has a large and very vocal fanbase. Those who bought an Xbox basically had only Halo as a decent game for a long, long time and so it became the face of the system, and what all Xbox adopters rallied around. I think the amount of pure "OMG Halo is so awesome!!!!!!!!111!!" just gets on other gamers' nerves, and so they tend to hate Halo.

This is my reason as well.  IMO, the game is solid but not bad or good.  I bought my 360 a couple months before for Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata.  The future release of LO also convinced me to get one.  The Halo 3 fiasco was a painful time for me to be a 360 owner.  Practically everyone I knew that had a 360 was just really really into Halo and they all expected me to think it's God's gift to gaming.  When I told them I'm not that into it, they looked at me wierd (why would I ever think of getting a 360).  I was about to sell the system then, but I'm very glad now I'm not with all the jRPGs coming out.

Luckily, COD4 rectified the situation and was a quality game that deserved it's sales.  The HL games will be the best shooter franchise forever.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
