Going along with the first part of your post, which is the idea I am addressing.
There is a reason why FF13 is exclusive in Japan, not because of the install base, because if you put the game on an N-Gage, N-Gage would put every other phone out of business in Japan.
The reason is their economy.
Japanese economy is very much tied into American economy, but recently Japan has been pulling away and liberating itself from american market trend by mercantilist principles. Keep japanese money in japan. Keep japanese companies going. The market has been improving according to these principles, and I've been studying them for past 3 years.
This move is
a) saving console sales in america that are selling at loss and even greater loss because of strong yen and weak dollar.
b) still selling the same number of games
c) staying afloat.
this was a strategy that was almost certainly discussed with and co-imagined by Sony, who claims to be blindsided by the "announcement". (BS)
d) making sure that 360's continue to not sell in Japan.
(Some may ask why, and the reason is this)
Since FF7 (which many discredit as being a greta game) SE and Sony were tied together. In many instances the amount that a company can make increases as it distribution lanes decrease.
Ask yourselves this, why do cell phone makers only release certain phones for some companies, instead of all? Because they have a better chance at being sold, and also developing a fan base, along a smaller lane of distribution.
