Just to clarify some of this, the DS install base at the release of NSMB and the NES install base at the release of SMB3 was greater than the PS2 install base at the release of GT3.

This lies in stark contrast to the general belief on this site that every game released to the full LTD hardware sales of its respective console.

I understand and grant your point. In any case the best comparison from the point of view of similar userbase is probably GT3/4 on the PS2 versus SML/2/3 on the Game Boy. Established franchise on a new platform soon after launch that ultimately achieved well over 100m in sales. Mario blows GT away.

Fair enough, although I wouldn't exactly say it's a slaughter by any stretch of the word.

The highest selling Mario titles sold 17 million(SMB3), 18 million(SML), 11 million(SML2), and 15 million(NSMB) whereas the highest selling Gran Turismo title sold 14 million(GT3), which is a difference of  +3 million, +4million, -3 million, and +2 million, so it isn't that far off.

Also, the individual sales of the other Gran Turismo titles are pretty much on par with and sometimes even exceed the sales of the other Mario titles.
