Well, since I believe the ps1 was sold at a loss, and the n64 was more powerful it would make sense it was sold at a loss, and the same with the ps2/gc.  I figured that Ninteno managed to make their money during that time because they have a virtual monopoly on the portable side, that is until Sony managed to steal some of their thunder, but they still have a good solid hold on the portables.
