I'm not arguing the series is getting milked, but how many other series have been getting milked? Guitar Hero is up to an insane amount as a PS2-era game, and God of War is getting milked too - It's had 4 games in 4 years if GOW3 comes out next year!

I can't remember a time when four projects based off of one game were being done at the same time. (Halo chronicles, Bungie's Halo, Peter Jackson's halo, and third-person Halo.)

Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 13V, Final Fantasy 13 DS, Final Fantasy 13 Cellhone... and the two unnamed Final Fantasy spinoff games?

Also when you mentoned FF you forgot the Final Fantasy Crystal games on GC, Final Fantast Tactics Advance, and Final Fantasy X-2.  I'm sure  abunch of Chocobo games too.
