Go to a store. Ask to see their HD loop and compare up close the difference between a LCD and a Plasma. You'll never want an LCD larger than 26 inches again. Ever.
My suggestion is to wait until August. Once the new season of the NFL starts up, sales on such TVs are just crazy. Brand names? If you plan on gaming, get a Samsung. You wont find a better picture quality attuned specifically for gaming.

PURCHASE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON WHATEVER YOU GET.
As for your console woes...that's entirely up to preference. There's isn't much difference between the Xbox 360 Elite and the PS3 in terms of utilizing 1080P...unless you plan on investing in the High Def DVD market. In that case, the PS3 is the way to go.
