A 2D Metroid however seems weird, especially in light of Metroid Prime 4 coming at a later date. I simply don't expect Nintendo to develop 2 Metroid games side by side, especially not in a way that both would have released about the same time if MP4 wouldn't have been scrapped and restarted along the way.

Why not? Maybe the original plan was to have 2D Metroid in 2020 and Prime 4 in 2021. Is that such a stretch for the company that released NSMBUD and  Mario Maker 2 five months apart, or Twilight Princess HD a year before BOTW, or Link's Awakening in 2019 and possibly BOTW2 in 2020?
