^yeah, I think it's even supposed to have BluRay!

Yeah, but they sacrificed a userbase in doing so.

Well, considering that the userbase was "people who will not pay $$$ for a console", I don't think they've permanently lost it, especially when 360 has thrown Sony such a bone by having a low reliability and costly Live service.

alot of points you made make alot of sense, in a way it did not disrupt the main funtion of the pc so far (software not games), but it definately has disrupted the gaming market on pc's.
Microsoft saw the direction Sony was taking, so in a measure to try and cripple them they made their own console to directly compete with Sony's Playstation.
The trouble is sony is still 1 step ahead and has come up with the cloud computing idea, which if successful with be the future of maybe pc's and console's, just imagine not needing any powerful hardware to play on your games or to do work..

it's the future of handheld

Yeah, cloud computing is a very interesting concept, but I think it has huge moral ramifications.
Your personal data is on other computers!
But yeah, sony is a step ahead, hopefully the curve catches up, or else the sacrifices they've made will be a waste.

@theprof00: When you call it a sacrifice, you make it look like Sony was planning to lose these billions even after 4 years of launching the PS3. It's spin and no one is buying it.

@LordChris: You just said without the PS3 SCE would have gone bust. Do you realize how distorted that statement is? No one is suggesting they shouldn't have made the PS3. But clearly they made wrong decisions, which they're reversing now, but what's done is done.

Yes, Sony made a system which had features nobody was asking for, charging more than any console company has ever asked for, ON TOP of losing more than 250$ per console at launch despite the exorbitant price.

They did expect to lose money on it, and a lot of it.

PS: it's only been three years not four.

And yes, everyone is buying it, the ps3 that is. Good luck continuing to subtly troll sony like you just did.

EDIT: Talking like you did, you sound like the ilk that goes about claiming that Sony has no business sense and their arrogance is what brought them down. This is FUD, but if you didn't mean that, then I apologize for being aggressive. But if you're going to say I'm "spinning" things, at least have a valid reason why.

You're spinning things once again, and evading my point. Surely Sony expected to lose some money initially, but after 4 years, and as much as they've lost? I don't believe you actually think that.

I didn't mean no one's buying the PS3. I said no one's buying your far-fetched assertion that Sony expected all these losses.

You are the one who's trolling here. Either that or you're really naive for those beliefs.

Surely you are trying to annoy me...

What exactly is your point? Because I definitely did respond to the point in your post.

Sony expected to lose money on the ps3 because it costed roughly 870$ at launch, and still costs them anywhere from 40-80$ more than the price of the machine, even after 3 years.

You know what I find most fun?
Looking at the ps3 and finding things that back up my point .

Like "Why did they go with USB controllers, and why did they get rid of the memory card slots", was once a big question for me.
Now, looking at it I see:
a) the perfect outlet to use a thumb-drive or USB memcard reader, and cut out the added cost of having to not only pay for multiple readers, but also to stop paying those companies for their technology.
b) connect your digital walkman.

(this is even more interesting when I just read the other day that sony is coming out with their own iTunes type software. It's simply amazing how the bricks all fall into place.)

ding.ding..ding..we have a winner!

notice:

any card reader work's

any USB flash card work's

any USB keyboard works

standard SATA laptop harddrive work's.

Even some USB printer's work right off the start.

I AM BOLO

100% lover "nothing else matter's" after that...

ps:

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner.  I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.

What exactly is your point?

My point is that you're wrong in calling everything that happened with the PS3 a necessary sacrifice that Sony did on purpose.

Sony expected to lose money on the ps3 because it costed roughly 870$ at launch, and still costs them anywhere from 40-80$ more than the price of the machine, even after 3 years.

They expected the losses at launch... that's obvious.

But when they launched it, did they expect to drop prices so fast that even after all these years, they're still unprofitable both on hardware and overall? No. I don't believe that. I hope you don't either, and that this argument is all based on a mutual misunderstanding.
