This update risks bricking your console no matter what. Whether you have "modded" it or not makes ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE. The fact is, this is a firmware update that includes the boot2 file, and like any update of a computer BIOS, there is always a risk of bricking. So, Nintendo, in a useless attempt to get rid of homebrew (because this update has no new features or enhancements for the customers) risk bricking the Wiis of many many legit customers.

I am dead scared of running this update, as I live in Europe and own a Wii bought from Canada, getting it repaired will not be easy for me if something happens, and then I'd lose all the VC games i've spent hundreds of dollars on.

Sucks.

Just don't stop the update process and you'll be fine. If you think it isn't doing anything, wait longer. It takes 10-15mins or so.

i have a non modded Wii. Updated and have absolutely no issues.

Why did it only take like 90 seconds for me to do this 15 minute update?

OT: I bet a lot of these people just did something really dumb. Like turning it off during the install or updateing their modded Wiis.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

@Burgerstein: Maybe you have faster internet connection than others? And you updated when there was no traffic in the update server.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

^ That's probably true, I actually updated like a day before the message was sent out to do the update.
