Sega is preparing new hardware! But it's not for the home!

Time to stir up the rumor mill. Sega might be working on new hardware that should cost between $900 - 1200. This isn't for the home.

Sonic, can you elaborate?

New hardware? Not for the home?

Even their high end RINGEDGE arcade board costs sub 300USD.

I hope it's something 3D (and that the ghost of Megadrive VR lives on)!

Arcade machines are one of the few devices that could make comfortable use of goggle-less 3D displays.

Goggle free 3D display technology.

That would give arcades such an edge that the home won't catch up for atleast a decade.

Imagine a HotD5 where the zombies are literally coming out of the screen.

Frightening stuff.

The Poster "Sonic" is a former employee of SEGA of America who still has contacts within the company, he is claiming that SEGA have hardware prepared that shall cost between $900-$1200 and shall not be for the home. Veterans of Beyond3D, "Function" and "TEXAN*" who have been posting there for many years under various usernames give their opinion and say it may be Goggle-Free 3D Stereoscopic Technology for the arcades.

If this is true, then SEGA shall no doubt single handedly resurrect the world's arcade industry because as "TEXAN*" quite rightly points out the home won't be able to catch up for decades.

Sounds awesome, but it won't resurrect the arcade industry at all.

Here's some weight to the rumour.

They've already got what looks to be a Stereoscopic 3D patent in place -

SEGA Master System with real working 3D Glasses

Sure it would bring in a crowd, but how long would that last?

Interesting ideas but I personally hope its more than just 3d screens.
What ever happened to virtual reality?!?

I remember when I was a kid, playing some sick fully realized shooter game in VR.
The graphics were really big polygons so it didn't look great but it played just fine.
Then I didn't hear anything about VR again, it should be ready for primetime by now.
Make it happen SEGA!!

Now that would get people to the arcades again. Fully realized VR worlds with quality graphics. I know they are still working on it since a friend went to some high tech convention 3 years ago and talked about a really cool butterfly VR experience she had at the show. That in my opinion is the true future of gaming.... until the Holodeck ;)
