Forums - Sales Discussion - Is a game profitable when its multiplatform?

@Zuhyc

Well its still a hyped game, your wrong about it not anymore because it went multiplatform.

I know it's still hyped, but the hype decreased after the announcement of the game going multi.

Can I have a link or is that your personal opinion?

He does have a point. Just look at DMC4. Back when it was ps3 exclusive, ps3 fans were bringing it up every five seconds holding it over 360 owners' heads. Once it went multiplat, it was as if ps3 fanboys forgot it existed.

Exactly so personal opinion. Now that the game is multiplatform. The hype is x2 cause 360 and PS3 will have the game.

100.000? If ever FFXIII gets released on Xbox360, it will outsell BD worldwide sales in Japan alone. Don't know about the Xbox360 sales though. If Xbox360 had a bigger userbase in Japan, SE wouldn't hesitate to port the game.

exactly, now SE is going to see how big sonys killer apps sell, and also see if RPGS can sell on the 360 (ones like Lost Odyssey, Last remnant) as long as they sell decent, SE could consider it based on the huge american userbase for 360, and America has always been a major contributer to FF success

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

multi-platform games usually get more sales in SOME cases... e.g if madden was only on 360, it would sell less then all the others put together... but in the case of a hardcore multi-platform game, having it exclusive seems to generate huge amounts of hype... case in point- the darkness- new IP, decent shooter on ps3/ 360, not much hype and compare that to gears- also a new IP and a decent shooter, but got much more hype due to it being exclusive, and it's sold 5x more then the darkness(even though the darkness is on 2 platforms and gears on 1)

yes ishy, but as you can see, gears was EXTREMELY better then the darkness to alot of people. You cannot compare it like that

Gears and Darkness is a bogus comparison.

Being exclusive doesn't automatically make a game more hyped, and if it does, than hype is cheap. DMC4 and Assassin's Creed will absolutely sell more copies thanks to being multi-platform.

Makingmusic's claim that "Quite often, developers are willing to sacrifice added profits to make a higher quality game. That is what a true artist does. Things aren't always about money. Artistic expression is far more important to many people" is sadly far too naive. The real reason most of the best non-first party games are exclusive is because one console is always incredibly dominant. When one console has a massive install base advantage, it may make more sense financially to make six exclusive games for the dominant platform than it does to make four or five games for two or more platforms. Practically all the major third-party exclusives were on PS2 last gen, right? It's the publishers calling the shots, not the developers, after all.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

tru say lost tears...
