Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Nintendo Still a Game Company?

Just look at the top ten Wii software units published by Nintendo.

None of them are video games.

Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Party 8, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Link's Crossbow Training, Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree

None of those are video gam... wait, what?

"So...what do you think? Do you think that Nintendo has surpassed the need of being called a video game company, or should they still retain the lowly title with the other consoles? Discuss."

Se ye lets discuss Nintendo fans.Dont go and kill discussion with gifs and face palm pics..

"So with that in mind, why talk about the Wii in the same breath as the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3? I think it muddles things and forces a sort of "But then Nintendo..." after each sentence. So, how to handle it? Do we refer to the 360 and PS3 as "hardcore platforms," or the Wii as a "casual" or "mainstream" platform? Or do we just keep calling them all video games?
"

Well... I would say then we should stop talking about Xbox 360 and Ps3 as video game consoles because of singstarts and rock bands...
But they are very little percentage of each system games.
While Wii has games like Wii fit, lets just try to image that only on Ps3/Xbox360..
Balance board..Geez.

Take my love, take my land..

Video games are toys.

That makes Nintendo *gasp* a toy company.

How shocking. Can we move on to things that matter now?

I thought video games were artistic masterpieces on the level of a Dostoevsky novel. Are you telling me I was wrong?

Actually he has a slight point. Nintendo is no longer focused on making video 'games', they are making video entertainment software. I doubt Miyamoto rejects any idea because it's not a 'game', he looks only at if said idea is fun and adds value to the player.

Wii Fit, Brain Age, and many of their DS titles are hardly focused on gameplay but they remain fun. More and more 3rd parties are following suit with Gold's Gym, EA's Sport Active, Ubisoft's My ___ Coach series, etc.

Honestly no, but not in a bad sense. Nintendo is an entertainment company that focuses on game and software entertainment. So Nintendo is actually bigger and better than "just" a game company. They do far more. I would never have personally thought being a "just" or "no" company was a good idea.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Oh, that's a really good idea.

While we're at it, why don't we change the New York Times book list to exclude Harry Potter, and let's take Bill Gates off the Rich List because he made his money with software which let's face it isn't a real product.

And we can take Mount Everest off the highest mountain list because it doesn't start at sea level and change the result of a cricket match because we don't like the umpire.

Yeah.

Lists and comparisons are like accounting. They're either honest or not, and once they are dishonest they don't tell you anything useful.

Bah, humbug.

The badly stated point is that not everything we label "video games" are actually games. Some of them are more "video toys" as in something with which you play as you wish, around which you make your own goals and even rules.

But the examples brought forth are actually the wrong ones because Wii Sports and in a lesser degree Wii Fit are actually structured like games. Very simple ones, but we had even simpler ones back in the days of yore :)

Examples of "video toys" would be the likes of Sim City, Sim Life, The Sims, Noby Noby Boy, maybe Endless Ocean.

"..." - Gordon Freeman

They make video GAMES. what's this mean? no board games!

Tag:I'm not bias towards Nintendo. You just think that way (Admin note - it's "biased".  Not "bias")
(killeryoshis note - Who put that there ?)
Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Games are toys, period.
