Forums - Sales Discussion - Peter Moore: Next Xbox in 2011-2012 (EGM)

Christopher_G2 said: No chance in hell the 360 sells like the PS2, in the US or anywhere else. Even with the longer lifecycle that's nothing more than a fanboy's dream. The PS2 is outselling the 360 now for Christ's sake. 115 million plus sold world wide, and 40 million just in the US. The fact is none of the three consoles will even approach PS2 numbers. On the longer lifecycle of the console I think it's a great thing for the gaming industry. I don't know why Microsoft just tossed the X-Box brand away 4 years in. I mean they just wanted to end it, and screwed X-Box fans with this limited backwards compatability crap. I think if the 360 has a 6-7 lifespan before the next console it will end as a far more successful system than the original X-Box, and I think it'll allow more gamers to buy multiple consoles as they won't be looking to next gen too soon. And when we get the new console people will be more satisfied as it's developement will be thought out long and hard. It will give the industry some stability. Increase the general console cycle from 5 years to 6 or 7 or even 8. Most people who aren't in the very hardcore graphics crowd will appreciate having a console for longer time without the pressure to buy the next one.
The XBox (like the Gamecube) was dead long before it was replaced ... Third Parties stopped giving it support and you would have had a sparse year in 2006 had Microsoft continued to "Support" the XBox.

The PS3 and 360 have pushed things pretty far in terms of shallow graphical processing (polygons, pixel effects, etc.): but with massively more processing power (which should be available by the next gen) there's a lot new you could do in terms of physics and AI that's not feisible today. E.g. apply real physics to *everything* in the game world (not just a select small number of things), apply much smarter AI techniques (e.g. recursion, etc.)
Oh by gum The ps3 is a brand new console games are not even using 20% of it's potential yet. The Cell is very capable of that stuff now, just needs time. The Cell is an amazing processor.

I think the long term success of the Wii will determing what the price points will be for all three next gen consoles. If the Wii leads or is in a strong second place, I think all three next consoles will have a lower launch price. Not necessarily at $250 price but maybe the $300 price that was the upper limit in the previous generation. I could even see $400 still being the upper limit depending on the success of the 360 and the overall cost of electronics in 5 or 6 years.
Nonsense the wii is not a next gen console. It's just the novelty and gimmicky stuff that's driving it at the moment. The ps3 will be around for atleast 7 or 8 years before ps4 that's the potential of it. Xbox seem to be going the incremental route in terms of smallish upgrades each console meaning shorter lifespan.

As always the " has only used of the available processing powere" are 99.99% hype ... You'll see improvements over what has currently been offered but there is no magical untapped resource on the PS3.

Why? What about the PS3 earns it a longer life than the Wii or XBox 360? It can't be power as both the Gamecube and XBox were more powerful than the PS2 yet had shorter lives; and it can't be sales because (at least currently) the PS3 is the weakest selling home console on the market. Hypothetically speaking, if the PS3 is sitting at under 25 Million consoles sold worldwide at the begining of 2009 they will have a new system out in 2010 or 2011 ...

Why do people still rag on the Wii ? Will it still be a fad when it's sold more then the PS3 & Xbox360 combined ? Like it was a fad before it launched and everyone thought it'd do crap ?

The Xbox360 has had fairly plain sailing due to a good supply of games. The Wii & PS3 need games, badly. The Wii, already has the installed base, Dev's can increase their profits by converting titles to the Wii, or making new titles for 10% to 30% of the cost of developing for the Xbox360/Ps3. PS3, also looks to be getting exclusive titles..if a bit slowly (Haze, anyone ?)

Once the Wii has games, it will wipe the floor with both the Xbox360 & the Wii. It's just down to simple math and market penetration. If the Xbox360/Ps3 appeal to hardcore gamer's (Xbox Live is making a dent with casual gamer's I'll admit) Say, 10 in every 100 People ? and the say the Wii appeals to 30 in every 100 people. The Wii has the potentail to outsell even the PS2. Sony realise this and will keep the Ps2 around for a few year's yet (10 Year lifespan anyone?). It's the only console that is undercutting the Wii, and selling well.

Similar analysis can be made of the PSP vs DS, price plays a big part but, design is key. Sony are taking a similar approach to the handheld market as they did the Home, the PSP is basically a portable PS2, and now like the slimline PS2, there is a Slimline PSP. But name me some innovative games on the PSP. Not many eh. What about the DS ? The console everyone (including myself) said would flop.

I realise this analysis portrays me as a Nintendo fanboy a bit (I'll be buying a PS3 when there are some good games available.) If Sony can pull of a sucess with the PS3, it'll be a winner, but it's a big gamble against their competition. If the Ps3 fails (I can't see it 'failing' in any sense of the word) Sony will just put more effort into designing the Ps4, ensure it's at a good price point with games. Don't count Sony or M$ out. They've both got loads of money, M$ in particular.

Sorry for the long post. Wii raggers pee me off.

Good thing to know that they are working on it. Considering that they didn't have enough time to develop the Xbox 360 design, as seeing it was a poor design for the GPU extracting heat from the console. So this is good news. Just curious what will the name be?? O_O

Old thread... but lol @ the xbox 360 coming close to the ps2 on usa.
