Forums - Sales Discussion - 1 week and DS will hit 50 million

Chance it will surpass GBA lifetime sales of over 75 million? Started out much slower than DS but the DS has become a rocket.

It's simply amazing how it has managed to sell 50 million in almost three years. The DS a monster. It definitely has a chance at beating the PS2.

Add me for Pokemon, New Leaf, and Fire Emblem, Mario Kart 8.

That is awesome. I'm hoping to get one at the end of this year.

Two screens? You touch one? PSP is far stronger. How the hell will this sell?

Just curious but what numbers are you basing the 1 week to break 50m on? It seems like it will need two weeks to break 50m.

HA! DS failure - CONFIRMED!

PS - yes that was sarcasm =P

The DS has reasonable chances to double the GBA LTD numbers.

So that would be 159 million right?  I think that's doubtful but possible.  But the mere fact that we don't dismiss this kind of prediction out of hand is evidence of how amazingly well the DS is doing.

It also depends, a lot, on whether a new system comes out to replace the DS, or whether it is allowed to rule with an iron fist until old age takes it, like the first Game Boy.  If the latter becomes true, then 160+ is definitely well within reach, and dark corners may echo with whispers of "200".  But on the other hand, I suspect we'll see a successor before that has a chance to happen.

We should also be aware that for the first time there's a strong second place handheld that doesn't look like it'll die out.  That will probably bring down the upper range of DS lifetime sales some.  (Perhaps from "OMG to the moon!" down to "OMG upper orbit!")

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

The DS has a chance to become the best selling game system ever if it can shake off the perception that it's just a game system. Right now in Japan about a quarter of the software coming out is purely educational. Some schools have their own programs/carts made and the students do schoolwork on their DS. The "My French/Spanish Coach" titles are coming out soon and if they sell in the Americas then maybe there will be more. That kind of edutainment software will break down the perception that the DS is just a game system and the public may start seeing value when they see a kid playing with their DS instead of something they need to write about to their congressman and have banned. Localizing the Yoga Trainer is also another hopeful start. And I can't wait to see the Naked Chef's cookbook on the DS, woohoo!

I think DS will pass 200M mark by the time it dies out.
Nintendo needs to bring all those "non-game" titles out from Japan.

Good point. Edutainment software really could become essential as selling point for the DS. Japan is way ahead of the rest of the world in that regards, the real challenge for Nintendo is to establish this kind of software also in the western world.

Thanks for reading! Yes, the edutainment angle, if it can be stealthily brought in (ala Brain Age) and then get a little mainstream moment to crystallize what's going on... something like Al Roker learning Spanish with his DS, or a family singing Auld Lange Syne with the father playing Jam Sessions that's hooked up the stereo. Or Van Cliburn giving kids tips on how to perfect their musical technique on the Rhythm and Notes software. It could happen, one of the ladies on "The View" could start talking about how she does her yoga everyday with her DS Yoga Coach. I know this is what Nintendo is trying to figure out, will it work? Can they bring the same type of edutaiment and Palm type programs (budget balancers, cookbooks, interview trainers, etc.) and sell them? If it works I think the DS has more of a chance to blow open the market than the Wii, but we will see.

 Your phraseology is wonderful.

And, might I add, your point is valid.
