Forums - Sales Discussion - UK world's 2nd largest games market in January

Regardless of how much everyone else seems to accept Japan eventually falling behind the UK, I'm, personally, pretty surprised it's actually happening. We're not that rich, and we're not that big, but apparently we love ourselves a bit of gaming.

Well, next generation will be the one where the UK will get a very firm cementing in second place, and the EU as a whole will probably become the single largest and most important market.

Isn't it kind of lopsided to compare an entire continent with how many hundreds of millions of people to one country of the US's size?

We're the fifth richest nation in the world (In order: US, Japan, Germany, China, UK (China and Germany switch around depending on who does the estimating)). However, due to population sizes, we have more money per person than all of those other countries.

Also, we, on average, work around 200 hours per year less than out Stateside cousins and the Japanese, although the Germans work 300 hours less than us.

In essence, we have more money per person than the Japanese, and more spare time to play games.

Fish & Chips Training for DS/Wii imminent?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Well, yes, but with every Treaty the EU moves closer to being a single country

Population sizes (roughly):

US: 300 million
EU: 500 million

Well, there was that recipe helper that came out for the DS a little while ago, it probably has fish and chips on it somewhere (though, the recipe isn't really that hard...)

The handhelds are saturated and the consoles are dead - this is the reason the Japanese market is being crushed.

You'll never see the DS sell 28 million in the UK like it does in Japan, it will be 10 million at most.

Bet - "PES 2009 (PS3) will sell (closer to) 150k first week in Japan" - Pooperscopper
"It will sell closer to 125k" - Me I agree.
ME = OWNED :(

End of '09 Predictions:

Wii: 78 million
X360: 35 million
PS3: 27 million

While I agree that it'll never reach 28 million... it's not far off from 10 million now, and the DSi isn't out yet. 15 million is looking a lot more likely, tbh.

Next generation will have the handhelds much closer, and the home consoles will be plain outsold. Factor in higher prices and software sales, and you've got the recipe for an overtaking.

Handhelds will never be a take over, though, due to population numbers.

Well!

Fair enough.

I think you miss the point.

China is in the top five but out of the 1.+ billion what % enjoy a high standard of living?

The Human Developement Index means a lot more than simply the countries wealth.

It takes along with other things the GDP per Capita and the PPP (Purchasing Power Parities) to measure a country's standard of living. Japan is at 8, UK is at 21.

Meaning the average Japanese worker earn more and has more purchasing power than the average UK worker.
