Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Is this the last good year for the xbox 360 ?

I just don't see them getting games that would justify keeping it on the market that much longer. Nothing that they have out in the next couple of years is going to review as high as some of the games that were on the console in its first years, and after a couple of years of lackluster reviews for the majority of its games (and only two MS games of the store bought variety -- the type that people buy consoles to play rather than the downloadable ones -- had better than lackluster reviews last year) the console will start to lose a bit of steam thus necessitating the need for a new console to keep up their rep.

So the system that shares 95% of it's library with the PS3 doesn't have enough good games to last much longer? You may not realize how negative that is for your favourite system ...

Yes, but imo Sony will have much better games coming from their first and second party studios and from certain big third party studios like Square (FFXIII in Japan; FF Versus XIII; KH III is still a possibility), Konami (Hideo's next project), and Sega than will the 360 in the coming years.

If Microsoft was releasing a console in 2009 we would know by now ...

If Microsoft was planning on releasing a console in 2010 there would be developers who were receiving development kits soon, and we would have tons of rumours about Microsoft releasing a console in 2010 ...

When did you know that the 360 was coming out?  Most people didn't know before GDC 2005 or the MTV Special a couple of months later.  I don't remember there being any mention of a new xbox in any publications that I read that were talking about games like Stranger's Wrath or Jade Empire when they were first released.  And there was no information about a year earlier when Halo 2 released in November of 2004.  The biggest XBox news that I remember from that time was that Halo 2 was releasing and that Ninja Gaiden Black and Half-Life 2 were coming to the original xbox in '05.

knew it was coming in 04 there were rumors all over gaming mags, despite halo 2 coming out, i think the killing off of the original box was more of a surprise then the 360 coming out.

ive said this many times if any of them release before 2012 there will be backlash that would most likely lead to a crash this will not only come from the general buying public, but devs, whos asset libraries will be devalued. it would not be good for the industry right now.

we are in actually a pretty good place for all three with software sales being what they are sometime next year all three should put up proffits and continue to do so till the end of the generation. sony will be the last to post profits form its game division, and depending on how many units they move form now until the cut (march earliest), software could even offset a small loss per console basis.

other things that work against the launch are the recession that we are told we are in. the much more real slide of the euro and most world monies against the yen

on top of that there  currently on going  major revisions in board and ram design the like of which havent been seen since the mid 90s, this shift should be more defined by 2012 with techs less risky. it also gives time for ISPs to be upgraded and allow for smoother download of full games which is something devs want to kill the resale market (though rental of the game from a download is most likely a devs wet dream rentals on music and games make fortunes)

honestly the only one that could benifit from ending early is nintendo, since they have traditionaly made a profit out of the gate, making people upgrade would just be more cash for them, but killing a cash cow (the wii) is always dangerous

Let's also not forget that the 2005 launch was clearly rushed, as evidenced by its relatively weak 1st year lineup, plus that whole "why are our consoles melting down?" fiasco, something I am certain they will want to avoid come 720.

with the strong 3rd party support xbox 360 has.. i dont see it fading away for two or more years

@misterd

You do know that according to the law of averages, the more of those you cross off the board in your sig the likelier it becomes that a title will rise up to become the PS3's savior, right?

Just look at Nintendo. When it looked like almost everything they were doing was wrong back in the N64 days, all of a sudden they came up with Pokemon.

This is definately the last good year for 360...

Just like 2007 with Halo 3 and Mass Effect...

And 2008 with Gears 2 and Left 4 Dead...

These threads get tiring...

You're right, 2007 was probably the last good year for the 360.  7 AAA games on Game Rankings (All of those of the $60.00 store bought variety and 4 of them exclusives -- which isn't a great year in comparison to most of the PS2's best but we'll give them a good year for it anywhile) while it only had 6 in 2007 (but only 4 of those were of the store bought $60.00 variety and only one of those was an exclusive), and there is no reason to believe that 2009 will be any better for the 360.

Edit And at least one major site agrees that that is a likely possibility:

Predictions for the 360 for '09 games:

'09 Games Fail to Measure up to Quality of '07/'08
"It would be tough for us to be wrong on this one, though we'd be happy if we were. There is no question about it; the past two years have produced some fantastic games. From Mass Effect to Halo 3, Gears of War to BioShock and on, the Xbox 360 has seen some spectacular games. Comparatively, what has been announced for 2009 thus far seems slim. Granted, not everything that will come out this year has been revealed yet, but even with a few surprises it would have trouble living up to the past couple of years."
