I wouldn't be surprised MS wants to start a price war. They know Sony is in no financial shape to take further losses. In a war of attrition, the side with the most resources (money) wins.

Isn't the reality that MS isn't performing either? No software / technology company is doing well right now and im sure once MS's figures are out the suggestion of more price drops will look ludicrous to investors.

and this thread title is the worst troll bait ive ever seen. Thats why PS fans are freakin out

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

@Snake

Although Sony is a very large company, over the past several years their operating profits have only (typically) been in the $1 Billion range. When you start talking about several years worth of profit erased in a single year it is not a good sign.

Now, how this is important to gaming really depends on how Sony reacts to this ... Many companies in similar positions in the past have decided to sell divisions of the company to generate capital to offset their operating loss; in the current economic climate the divisions within Sony that would sell for a good price are fairly limited, and if Sony decided to sell game developers (as an example) the only developers that would generate the income they would require would be some of their best developers (that produce games you would want). At the same time, if Sony decided to focus on increasing their ROI they would probably cut back dramatically on the scale of most of their upcomming projects and only produce games with very high sales potential; I could be wrong but I suspect that many of Sony's upcomming games would suffer if their budget was cut in half.

so what? this is their first maybe second year where they lost money. Microsoft lost 6 billion on entire Xbox family but you didn't see that on vgchartz. I am not trying to defend Sony here i am just saying Sony its not screwed if it had two bad years. every company in the world has some bad period. When Game Cube was dying did anybody told Nintendo is dead? i think they did, and look at Nintendo now. They are definitivly winning this generation. Some people( (4 actually)on this we site are acting like they were waiting Sony to lose money for their entire life.OMG Sony is losing money!!!!!!!

Note: the last sentence describes only those 4 people

You know nothing.

A) its not the fact they have lost money, its the huge amount.

B) Microsoft were ripped to pieces on losing that money, but you didn't see it on VGChartz because VGCHARtz is barely 2 years old (or around that?)

C) Eh? Yes a lot of companys are screwed right now.

D) Nintendo made a profit on the Gamecube, it went out the gate profitable, the PS3 is the complete opposite, its still bleeding money. Not only that but Nintendo is only focused on gaming, this money loss is across all of Sonys divisions.

1.No i didn't know vgchartz is only 2 years old.

2.why would I care if THEY were losing money on music products or TV or multimedia products. I am talking about gaming products.

3.''Not only that but Nintendo is only focused on gaming, this money loss is across all of Sonys divisions''

Great since Microsoft is doing great on Vista and microsoft surface.

Why are you being a complete troll?

I agree a little with those who said all this is flaming against Sony. Just because it is not an economic website. Anyway is good to discuss this things to know about the future of the companies that offer digital entretainment, just don't make doom predictions without foundations. (I'm not attacking anyone just an advice)

What are you saying ? If the study of (video-game) sales in not economy, what is it ?

This web focus to gamers. Thats what I mean

What? This sight deals with sales numbers, which definately falls in the economic realm. And as a gamer myself, I would like to know the future of the game systems and the games that will be featured on these systems. If the companies that either make games or hardware are suffering financially, this will affect me as a gamer. Please explain how this is "flaming."

It's flaming just when someone makes tragical predictions without foundantions as I said before. All we are concerned about the financial situation of Sony, but a 16 years old gamer is not the right person to speak about it.

It's my opinion if you don't agree I'm ok with that.

Sony have been having to lay off alot of jobs lately, but the same goes for microsoft. Everybody is being hit by the recession. But I bet sony and microsoft are thanking their lucky stars that they have such a large foot in the only market that is doing so well in this time of recession.

no, Microsot hasn't announced any layoffs.  I'm sure Microsoft is being hit by the recession but not nearly as much as Japanese companies that rely on exports.  The yen is just way to strong right now for Japanese companies to compete with the prices of companies from other countries.

Good thing they have (had) a lot of money.

Arent profits (if there are any) handed out amongst the shareholders at the end of each fiscal year? i.e they don't save money?

When a publically traded company makes a profit, the money is split in two ways: either it is kept inside the company for reinvestment, which boosts the company's value, and therefore the shareholders' stock value goes up; or it is paid directly to the shareholders as a dividend.  Usually companies will keep some of the money and pay out the rest.

There's no question that if MS actually wanted to it could sell every xbox360 for $100. However, they are under extreme pressure as well to increase margins. So the question becomes, how high a priority do you think the xbox division is at MS? From ex-Managers at MS I've talked to, their financial organisation is very similar to that of the Soviet economies complete with their own fake currency to facilitate the meeting of planning targets.

Dont Sony have enough assets to see them through if things potentially get alot worse?

I can see buyers for some of their Intellectual Property. However who wil buy their factories for more than peanuts in an economy where most companies are trying to save cash and decrease production rather than increasing it?

Sony is a huge company so that question is too complicated to examine quickly, we'll just have to wait and see what they can do.

One big problem for them is that restructuring takes about a year to pay off (as the FT article says, for every fired employee, severance pay is usually needed). One can't imagine the complexity of restructuring a company in a short period, I think we're going to read things we can't even imagine right now.

You could easily argue that Microsoft will never have a better chance then they do now to put the dagger in Sony.  They have an unfair advantage right now because they are not as affected as Sony by the exchange rates and they have far more resources.
