Forums - Sales Discussion - january 3rd 2009: it's official, Microsoft has a problem with the 360.

Now that WW sales are released on Vgchartz, we can see that the 360 only has a 80k lead. The price cut had an effect during the holiday season, but what next? With a 400€ console, sony still playing in the same league than MS. I know, MS still has a lead and can cut the price again. But what will happen when Sony will cut it too? A 79€ 360???

Watch out Microsoft, your lead is now only 80k per week. Be scared, very scared.

Nah, but really. It's the biggest week for hardware in Japan (just about) and the other regions saw huge drops.

I've noticed that too, it was outselling the PS3 by almost 2:1 over the past month. So a gap of 80K is a lot smaller than I expected.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, for sure.

80k more to the gap. When the PS3 starts selling more then the 360 by a large margin, then its a news story

well price cuts wear off, but it will still have a comfortable lead over ps3 each week.

sooo.... what I gather is we will now be seeing "just wait for next week" replies again?

great... can't wait

You're gonna be disappointed in 2 weeks. As it has already been mentioned, the Japanese have a tradition where on New Years Day, they give relatively large amounts of money to their kids and teens, many of whom go out and spend that money on games. Seeing as how the 360 has the popularity of leprosy in Japan combined with the end of the holiday sales season everywhere else, it's pretty obvious that the PS3 would perform relatively strongly against the 360 during this week.

Clearly, Sony is the one with the problem. They were outsold by 80,000 units worldwide by a much more expensive console.
