Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS3 stills has a chance for 2nd place?

PS3 still has a shot at first place especially if this industry is about quality games rather than fad controllers.

I'm still looking for my little packet of delusion that comes bundled with every PS3...oh that's right I gave it to you. Why don't you keep that as a comforter throughout Winter.

Depends on how it will sell at 299$/€.

And i hope you meant in terms of SALES?
Because in terms of GAMES it was already N1 in 2008, and will be continue being N1 in next 5-7 years atleast. =)

This I disagree with. Personally I am also a JRPG lover and 360 easily has the better pick of 2008. VC for instance I would never like, because SRPG I dont really like. Also Considering Gears 2 is in my top 3 games of all time. I have to disagree entirely. As do probably at least 20 mill 360 owners out of the 27 mill.

Out of the big $60.00 exclusives from 2008, the 360 only had two games that managed anything approaching respectable review scores while the PS3 had two 9+ exclusives compared to the 360's 1 at Game Rankings and at IGN the PS3 had four 9+ exclusives from these games while the 360 had 1 9+ exclusive 1 high 8 game, and the rest were B-'s and Cs.  Game Trailers said the PS3 had the best game lineup in 208.  In 2009, I predict Alan Wake will be a C or B-, ODST will be a B+, and Halo Wars will be a B to B+.  Meanwhile the PS3 will have several A games released throughout 2009.

Thats bullshit. The 360 had more exclusives come out in 2008 than the PS3. It's just that their exclusives majority came out earlier in the year. The 360 still has more high rated games than the PS3. 2008 was the breakout year of the PS3 from obscurity. Microsoft beat Sony in 2008. 2009 is the make or break year for Sony.

I don't think it is any more delusional to think that the PS3 can come back in this industry any more than it was to believe that the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team was going to come back from 34 points down with 10 minutes to go against LSU in Baton Rouge in the 1993-1994 season or that UK was going to come back from being down 20 points to Duke in the NCAA tournament in 1998 and to go on to win the NCAA championship that year.  And do you know what happened in both instances?

Heavens to Murgatoids.

^ I rest my case.

EDIT: We're not predicting football/basketball score here...these are videogame consoles where sales variables are exclusives/price cuts and historic trends - there is no Michael Jordan coming to the rescue for the PS3.  Complain about critically successful games all you want but they only appeal to hardcore gamers, which is what you're not grasping - the Wii has picked up the ball and run away with it.

It is true that the 360 had more exclusives come out in 2008, but as far as the quality of most of those exclusives went:

Ninja Gaiden II Metacritic score = 81

Lost Odyssey Metacritic score = 78

Tales of Vesperia Metacritic score = 81

Too Human Metacritic score = 65

Infinite Undiscovery Metacritic score = 68

The Last Remnant Metacritic score = 65

I guess they did have 3 instead of 2 exclusives in stores that managed respectable review scores

Left 4 Dead Metacritic score = 89

Gears of War 2 Metacritic score = 93

Fable 2 Metacritic score = 89

Average score = 78.78

Meanwhile the PS3 had

Metal Gear Solid 4 Metacritic score = 94

Little Big Planet Metacritic score = 95

Resistance 2 Metacritic score = 87

Valkyria Chronicles Metacritic score = 86

Disgaea Metacritic score = 78

Siren Metacritic score = 78

Motorstorm:  Pacific Rift = 81

SOCOM Metacritic score = 63

Haze Metacritic score = 55

Average score = 79.67

The most notable thing about the 360's lineup in 2009 was its large number of disappointments:  Ninja Gaiden II, Tales of Vesperia, The Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, and Too Human.

Yeah, but for how much longer?  They're going to have to come up with some quality games if they want 2009 sales to be as good as 2008 sales and they really haven't come up with any good games since Spring '08.

Heavens to Murgatoids.

Why do people care so much about Reviews? I dont get that they just bunch of nerds reviewing game, with bias and not even attempt to be objective (Wii Music Review on IGN anyone), there are plenty of great games that are nowhere near being reviewied in 90% and 80% but yet people are looking at Reviewers like on Guru's.

But on topic, no if 360 and P3 have this same lifespan (or a similar one) PS3 will be stuck in 3rd place this generation, while Wii is a console that dominates , 360 is a cheaper HD offering and PS3 does not have enough exclusive value to outsell it.

Ps3 will outlive the 360 unless its very unlucky, so technically it will finish 2nd i think

No offense but I don't understand predictions like that. Not the "finish 2nd" part, but the "PS3 will outlive 360" part. Is there any reason to believe that?

The possible reasons I can see are:

- The "10 year plan"... a meaningless marketing gimmick which ignores the way the market works. The market decides the lifetime of the console, not Sony or Nintendo or whoever. All these companies can do is decide whether to support the market's decision, by continuing to support the platform as the market allows.

- Microsoft discontinuing the 360 early... Some people predict this due to what happened with the Xbox, ignoring the very special circumstances which led to it being discontinued (NVIDIA's fight with MS which prevented the GPUs from being produced). This is simply not gonna happen as long as the 360 is a profitable platform.

- PS3's supposed technical superiority... Assuming that's true (which is not certain at all), this would mean the PS3 would be the first console to have a long lifetime due to technical factors. Technical superiority never mattered much in terms of defining a console's lifetime.

Any other possible reasons I forgot?
