Mario is what got me into gaming and I'll always love Mario games.
My favourite though would either have to be Zelda or Tales. Ehhh, two way tie.

Zelda. It's simply consistantly great game in and game out. The lesser Zelda titels like Majora's Mask and Minish Cap are still better than any game in most game series.
Runners up: Mario, Metroid, GTA, Resident Evil
the second most successful is the final fantasy series so i am going to go with that since mario doesnt really do it for me
Shin Megami Tensei games are my current favorite.
FF is still at a close second. The story of ffxii was a letdown but ffxiii looks pretty good. That and ffvsxiii could change my opinion again
