After reading the crappy review of Boogie on 1up and noting some of the response from it, plus the mixed reaction from EA Wii titles, I figured I'd put my two cents in on the matter, while it's fairly clear where I stand I believe I can step back far enough to give an unbiased review.
First Boogie. To be honest I like Boogie. If you compare it's offering to say Singstar, your getting a dance mode, charachters with tons of unlockable content, a story mode, and a music video editor, so there is plenty extra to do here. So the amount of people complaining that the game is short, is just silly, it offers far more content then most games in it's genre. The dance controls are in my opinion are fun and refreshing after a string of dance and Guitar Hero titles that focus on following a string of symbols or colors toward an execution line, here your given the sort of freedom you get pulling off tricks in per say a snowboarding title. And personally that was new and well done, lacking depth but nonetheless good. Escpecially being that, the karoke portion of the game does have about the same depth as it's contenders. The Video Editor is quite awesome too, I can't imagine it being any simplier yet it offers a reasonable amount of effects and camera angles to make something, fun. Plus with unlockable songs, outfits, and stages much like Hotshot's golf and the like your given motivation to keep on playing. The game was also accused of only being fun with more then one person playing. This is clearly a stupid accusation considering no dancing or karoke titles are fun without others around to enjoy it, although this title at least attmepts to give you something to do playing by yourself, whether you edit a video, or play through story mode. Plus the graphics are nice and the menus are real slick(although at times they are a little slow loading)
This is not to say the game is perfect. I compared it to singstar but one thing it fails to do as well is pick songs. Doubtless being the most important desiscions in making a music based game. And in my opinion there song picks were a little to...safe. I mean really, Raining Men, YMCA, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, ABC, Oops I did it again... these songs have been done to death, and you tend to lack enthusiasm working your way through them, while Singstar tends to get more with the times with Coldplay, U2, and The Killers. So I hope for the sequel(if there is one) they get better songs. That said the list isn't horrible and there will no doubt be something there for pretty much anybody.
Secondly while I like that there is a story mode. Not having levels of difficulty in story mode, only having six levels, and cutscenes being text with pictures, is like the worse kind of story mode there is. The game is fun enough and the unlockables make it worth going through them but next time give us realtime cutscenes with voice to suck us in a little more. Also too it's just to easy to beat the game, the story mode ain't hard and you'll probably find within an hour you can mostly win in hard mode. Too put it another way, my 3yr old son mumbling his own nonsensical lyrics into the mic will award him usually a bronze medal on medium difficulty. A little high I'd say, but he scores plenty of points in other karoke games doing the same thing, so it's not just Boogie. With that said, if you do play better you will get a higher score for your charts, and honestly other games in the genre don't have story modes or unlockable content, so whether they are considered easy or hard, difficulty of your medals seems rather irrelevant for the genre.
So in conclusion while Boogie has it's flaws I don't understand why anyone would give it way less then a 7 out of 10, perhaps a 6 but in my book thats rather low when considering it's competition.(I'd give it either a 7.5 or 8, I'd have to make up my mind after playing it more I only have about 4 hours on it) In my opinion it seems people like the karoke but think the dancing is too simple or they complain about the story mode. I think when you consider all it's content, the game offers alot more then most entres in the genre and in some ways it's being punished for it.
Now this gets me to EA as a whole. EA isn't perfect, but the truth is Boogie is fun, SSX Blur is great and also is another underrated title, great controls music, too though a little lacking in depth, but it's an early game and I expect these franchises to offer much expanded gameplay oppurtunities in the future on the Wii. Now too we had Godfather which despite being a port, made great use of the Wii controls and still remains my second favorite Wii title. Madden I haven't played but alot of good things have been said about it, and the family play options in future sports titles sound great. MySims is another title that is following in Boogies and to some degree SSX Blur's footsteps, EA for these games have figured out a great graphics style that gives Wii players nice graphics and colors them and cartoons them enough to not be concerned with the lack of all the HD polish of the other two systems. It also looks to expand on the intuitive uses of the Wii mote which EA has pushed quite a bit and also expands on the creative elements that are introduced in Boogie, Boogie allowing you to create videos, and MySims allowing you to create tons of content.
So I guess I more or less defending EA, yeah they were a little late to the party and because of it some of there titles are a little bare, and others like Playground are playing follow the leader. But in the end I think some of there creative exploits are offering great new experiences to the Wii gamer, Boogie, and there sports line are noticably trying to bridge the gap between hardcore and casual gamers, that's a great thing in my opinion, they are also making the most of the graphics and style on the Wii, and really exploring creative, user created content, I think even moreso then Nintendo is. So I'm happily looking forward to there next-generation of Wii software. Your thoughts?
