Forums - Gaming Discussion - Chrono Trigger - Could they pull it off twice?

Everyone knows Square-Enix loves remakes.  They love it.  It's obvious.  It would be hard to argue that Chrono Trigger is quite possibly the greatest RPG that's ever been made (the only rael competition in the 2D world is Final Fantasy VI, another blockbusting amazing RPG).

My question is... what if Square-Enix tried to remake Chrono Trigger?  Not just a remake (which honestly, would be pretty awesome in its own right), but a full-on remake, perhaps in 3D similar to the Final Fantasy III and IV remakes.  Granted, it would take a pretty significant amount of devteam focus (and with Final Fantasy XIII, Ivalice Alliance, and Dissidia in the works, they really can't spare much manpower).

(For the sake of keeping the focus on the game, let us keep debate on console out of it, it could just as easily be on Wii or DS (since it released on the SNES) or the PS3 or PSP.  Please none of that.)

Thoughts?

Square Enix has recently announced that they are remaking some of the Dragon Quest games for the DS. After those are out, they will probably look for what is next to get cash in, and most obvious choices will then be chrono trigger, secret of mana and star ocean.

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

If they did they would need to figure out a way to retain the anime look.

I would want the anime cutsceens as seen in the (crappy) ps1 port but the actual game in ether amazing 2.5D graphics cell shaded or in 3D.

Nothing's cheaper than something free.

i believe that the problem with chrono trigger is that square does not hold the rights to it entirely ... or something like that. :)

so who would have the other part of the rights? Nintendo?

Playing the original SNES version the moment and WOOOOOOOOOOOOW its good best RPG easily is ChronoCross on PS1 just as good?
Remaking this classic would be a smart move by S-E and it wouldnt matter what console it would on it would be awsome.
