Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 hits 6 million sales worldwide!!

They are VERY even numbers if they are claiming actual sales to consumers.....

PSP exactly 25 million and PS3 exactly 6 million, so from that I would say manufactured or sold to retailers.

PlayStation 3 hits 6 Million Sales WorldWide

We recently reported that Sony had sold 4.48 Million PlayStation 3's Worldwide, but this figure was in fact a little dated (being up until Q1 2007) and we are now almost in Q3. New information from the Australian Sony 'Experience More' event, held in Sydney, revelaed by Sony puts the actual figures at approximately 6 million units sold.

Down under the PlayStation has sold 64,000 units and Sony Computer Entertainment MD Michael Ephraim explained to the audience that “on a slow week, the PS3 was selling around 2,500 units - putting it ahead of all other direct console competitors in the market.”

In related news according to Carl Rose, the Managing Director of Sony Australia - Blu-ray is dominating the market in Australia, with roughly 80 percent of all HD content (excluding PS3 games) being sold on Blu-ray discs, rather than on HD DVD.

Right now, there are 107 Blu-ray titles on the market, and with adoption rates now reaching "a satisfactory level", Sony promises to double that number by Christmas. This comes in light of this morning's announcement that retail chain Target would only be stocking Blu-ray players and discs, rubbing a little more salt in the wound of the competing high definition format.

Wow wow wow, people are getting sidetracked how about we just stick to the facts and there will be no more arguing!  Now the likely number for playstation 3's SOLD as in consumers hands is 5 million at most. Does anyone disagree?

Now they also say that on a slow week they sell 2500 PS3s putting it well ahead of all other direct competitors. Now I can assume two things from this sentance. A. this guy is full of shit or B. that since nintendo has come out and said that they were not competeing with sony and microsoft that it is selling a little more than the 360 in australia, thats it. Anyone disagree?

And lastly the last bit about Blu-ray does make sense and I can see that being true because the numbers are sastisfactory to what I have researched about the Blu ray, HdDVD war. Anyone disagree?

Now that must be the shipped figure .

Sony made 5.5 million PS3s through March 31, 2007 according to it's financial report earlier in the year.  This was done to account for the losses in the gaming division to investors.  The same report said had sold 3.57 million PS3s - to retailers - by March 31, 2007.  Sony isn't lying.  People just misinterpret reports.

The Sony quarter one report (covering Apri-June 2007) that came out on Thursday said that Sony sold .71 million PS3s to retailers - by June 30, 2007.  3.57 million + .71 million = the 4.28 million PS3s Sony has sold to stores worldwide.

That means that Sony has in fact sold 4.28 million PS3s.  Just as Nintendo had sold 9.27 million Wiis to retailers, and just as Microsoft had sold 11.6 million Xbox 360s to retailers through June 30.

All three 'sold' numbers are correct.  But in each case, the number of those consoles in the homes of gamers is significantly less than the number shipped.

Therefore, that means less than 4.28 million PS3s were in the hands of gamers by June 30.  Through June 30, Sony was at under 1 million sold to gamers in Japan (Media-Create), roughly 1.4/1.5 million sold to gamers in the USA + Canada and the rest of the Americas, and under 1.3 million PS3s have been sold to games in the rest of the world at the time (GFK, Chart Track, etc.).
