Forums - General Discussion - Has the userbase of this website changed??

Here is the debate:

Though I do not have any problems over who games over which system the most, I believe the user makeup of this website has changed.

For a long time now, everybody has made complaints that this website is overrun by Wii fanboys (can't say for sure for fans of the 360, PC, DS, or PSP), hence why the incredible sales it reports for that system.

But now I believe it really has changed and here is my evidence for my theory:

1) There are now more and more threads that focus on Sony platforms, specifically the PS3.

If I can even be more specific than that, lots and lots of LBP threads. There are also more and more threads about how the PS3 will make a turnaround, about its sales, and comparisons between the PS3 and the 360. Though there have always been many Sony threads, there seems to be a significant increase of them popping out.

2) Probably more amazing would be the polls.

I am going to refer to three polls. One asked who would win in a fight. The winner was Kratos, a well-known Sony mascot, over the second place winner Link, a famous mascot for Nintendo. The next poll was which game will eventually sell the most overall out of the select choices. After all the hoopla over how Nintendo Wii games suck and they are just considered good because they sell the most, most people voted LBP as the best choice, followed by Wii Music. And now we have a new poll that shows that VGChartz viewers play the PS3 the most.

Now, my theory will prolly be shown as a bunch of bull. It could be that the few Sony users here really do not have a life but just make more and more threads that cover the same topic over and over again. And maybe we have ghost voters - people who view the website but are not users and do not make any other contribution to the site other than voting on the polls. But it is something to consider.

Why did I make this website? To show using the argument on this website that "you don't agree with me because you are just another Wii/360 fanboy" is not foolproof. Times change and this website is growing bigger and bigger. Sooner or later, either people's choice of consoles expand or change. And that it is not a good argument to suggest that just because one prefers one console over another, their opinion does not matter. There are quite a few members on this website who can discuss a subject without any bias.

Your thoughts?

My thoughts are about how much this thread fails.

Yes, there are more PS3 threads. More PS3 is doomed threads than I can bear to see in one day. And there are more LBP threads. More LBP is not going to sell/do good threads.

The voting:

You can vote more than once. Simply delete your cache and you can vote as many times as you feel like doing that. My computer deletes my browsing history, cache, cookies, and such whenever I exit the browser, so I could vote over and over again for a choice, but who cares, it's a damn poll. Obviously some people do, as the most members on this site at one time is generally well under 300 people, but somehow we get thousands of votes. :S

I'm just going to point out the top 10 viewed games in the link below

obviously at least 1 sony fan (obviously there is 1 ninty and ms fan too) that doesn't have a life and likes to mess with the site. He probably has more time than anyone else. Maybe it is more than 1, maybe not. But most of them shot from ~10k views to a few 100k in a day or two. Its not that hard to defeat the voting system either.

Now, I do agree that there are more Sony fans than before, but I still think the Nintendo fans outnumber them by a fairly large margin, but they aren't as vocal. So we might have 10 (making up number) vocal Sony fans, and 10 vocal nintendo fans, but if you count the lurkers too, then Nintendo would have a much larger base.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

It's possible that a lot of the Sony fans on this site come from non-English speaking European countries and thus are forced to lurk, either by inflating the hits of a game or voting in a poll. Of course, this could be equally true for Nintendo and Microsoft fans, but they might feel more comfortable knowing that there are more fans of their console from English speaking countries like the US and UK.

Actually, I don't really have a good explanation for it. All I can say is that while LittleBigPlanet does get a lot of threads devoted to it, so does The Conduit and every last niche game that will likely never make it stateside.

Notice that for a number of people on the site, Wii is the first Nintendo console, which, atleast to an extent, explains why the Sony characters are comparatively popular. Kind of a same thing with Nintendo characters remaining popular despite Nintendo consoles losing in popularity.
There are also a number of multiconsole owners in the site, and PS3 is the latest of the three that had a big exclusive release (MGS4), while 360 and Wii haven't had anything near the same scale since spring.
Also, you forget the number of Wii Music threads a while ago, which spawned just as much as the LBP threads are at the moment, basically we have threads going about a console that has something happening. Halo release spawned a huge number of Halo 3 threads, GTA4 flooded the forum with GTA4 threads etc.
Also, the race between 360 and PS3 is most likely to lure in people interested in PS360 sales, since there's not much to see in Wii sales (outside how much Wii outsells combined PS360), or would be in relation to DS, if DS wouldn't top Wii sales for 100k per week.

I'm not saying that you would necessarily be wrong, but that's just the regular cycle we have seen quite a number of times already.

That's my attempt of an analysis on this subject.

You don't have to be online to vote (I believe), and as there are many guests, the total of users on here is oftenly up to 2000, therefore it isn't certain that some people inflate the poll.
