Somehow the last 3 posters barely saw this as a positive, even though the 360 in 1 year and a half has surpassed the xbox's total lifetime sales...

It didn't pass teh lifetime sales for teh XBOX is still has a ways to go for that.

The 360 has just passed the XBOX total sales for thr first year and a half before that the 360 was lagging behind the XBOX in terms of sales till that point in time.

Itis a positive though

Read the first post, it'll likely pass it before the end of the year.  And since the 360 very likely has at least another 3 years ahead of it (according to third parties that have mentioned Microsoft's 5+ year plan for the 360) it'll definately do a lot better.

Read his post Legend11 he stated passing the XBOX in a year and half and not two years.

Now read my post I said it was a positve. It will pass the XBOX no doubt but the original post was about the 360 finally trending past the XBOX at the same point in time after both releases alligned not about passing teh XBOX LTD which it will do later.

Office became included with Windows?

Ultimately, this milestone is very very very good for MS.

Regardless of the fact many want to think that it's of little importance, to JRPG fans and 360, it's very important, as it means that MS's Japanese push for games is working, and translating into considerable sales.

Looking at the chart(s), lets look at these few things:

#1. The Xbox 360 has already outsold the lifetime software sales of the first Xbox by about 50,000 and is increasing very rapidly.

#2. Like the Xbox vs. 360 launch in the US, the sales of the X360 in Japan and US was far less than the first Xbox. The 360 launched with sales of ~93,000 units in the first 5 weeks. The Xbox had sales of ~183,000 in the same timespan. So the Xbox started with double the sales in the launch timeframe.

#3. The 360 week over week is absolutely destroying Xbox's sales in a similar timeframe. By June, the Xbox was selling 800 units a week without any major titles coming out, during it's second June. For the 360, it's selling ~2400 units. 3x the units.

#4. The Xbox was DOA within about 12 months from launch, and never, ever, had anything to remotely help it out. The 360 has never really dropped in sales, and it's trend has been improving. With tons more J-Centric titles on the slate such as Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery, Ace Combat 6, Last Remenant, Devil May Cray 4, Gundam Mousou, and Resident Evil 5 all slated for this year, or early next year (I think RE5 is early next year), this bodes very very well for the market, as the 360 will continue to increase YOY.

Still, it's sales are nothing ultra impressive, but the fact is that the 360 will easily double, and I think it can't wind up with 1.75~2.5m units before the nextbox launches.

Now, for the PS3>360 comment. Lets look at facts here. The PS2 was the most succuessful console ever launched, whereas the Xbox was by far, the worst disaster in Japan's history. Now, for the 360 to be within a 2:1 ratio isn't a disaster for the 360, it's a disaster for the PS3.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

These figures are on par with what I have been arguing in my last article A Brief Look at NextGen War (http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=3686&start=0#end)

Though I also agree with those who say, its still only a minor development, and not a guarantor of MS success in Japan, and I also agree with the fact that its a "positive" development that puts MS in a "less negative" position. Its like recovering from AIDS to Hepatitis :D

There is a consequtive that MS can assure succes in Japan. He can bundle Xbox X (360, 720 etc) with Windows PCs or maybe Windows Version X with Xbox X. This way, it will double/triple/quadruple its sales. I think MS is playing for long term, and for now, they are just making themselves a recognized brand, more fierce attacks will come later.

i totally agree with u microsoft is just playing with market right now....if they were really in trouble just like freedquaker said "I think Microsoft is playing for long term, and for now, they are just making themselves a recognized brand, more fierce attacks will come later...and everyone isnt listening to ioi he even posted and said that that xbox 360 surpassed the original xbox in japan.....

It's important to note that this has been Microsoft's MO for some time now: they enter a new market, spend loads of dough, and gradually accrue market share. Then, they tie that new product in with their old ones, and effectively solidify their hold.

The easiest example of this is Internet Explorer. Many people may not remember the glory days of Netscape, but IE gradually eroded market share thanks to direct pushes from Microsoft (some pretty shady ones, at that). Slowly but surely.

I'm not convinced the same is happening in Japan, but it follows the same model. As the Source said, it's likely that the 360 will double Microsoft's market share, and I suspect the 720 will increase even further, unless they simply stop making RPGs (Blue Dragon 2 is already in development).

Exactly. While MS may never dominate Japan, they'll slowly build a market in the country. They're in this for the long haul; MS is one of the few companies nowadays that is VERY long-sighted. When they see a crack in a market, they don't care if it takes them ten years to achieve dominance, just so long as they do in the end. They're trying the same thing with the Zune. Ultimately, I think they'll dig deep into the iTunes/iPod market.

Whether you love 'em or hate 'em, you really have to respect the company. They're a pretty wily group over there in Redmond.
