The upcoming Mega Man 9 has gone to painstaking lengths to recreate the old school, NES feeling that made the original games so great. From its 8-bit graphics to its simple (yet awesome) soundtrack, the game certainly looks and sounds like the Mega Man of yore, and according to producer Hironobu Takeshita, the game will also feature some of the less memorable aspects of 8-bit gaming.
"In the options of this game, you can adjust that (flickering, slow down, etc.), unlike the old games," Takeshita explained in an interview with Gamasutra. "We purposely put some of those old-school bugs into this game, so it does recreate that feel."
Takeshita also explained how the development team was intentionally limiting itself with other old-school restrictions, such as allowing only a specific number of sprites on-screen at one time. "Yeah, there were some things, like you couldn't have more than three enemies on the screen at once," he said. "So we had to make sure that that's how it stayed in our game."
It's great to see the team's commitment to keeping the game like the classics, but it's even better to see that some of the more frustrating aspects of old-school gaming are being made optional. While they may be great for nostalgia, excessive slow-down or flickering could definitely turn off some younger gamers who give Mega Man 9 a try.
My take: What a great idea! Make the game as similar to a true NES game as possible, since the entire game reeks of fanservice anyways....
