Forums - Sales Discussion - Do you think SMG can pass SM64 in sales?

yea it will in 2-3 years

Around the Network

no doubt about it

Dont think so

If Sunshine sold 5.5 million on a console that only sold 21 million, and was very poorly recieved compared to most Mario games, then it shouldn't be too hard for Galaxy to sell at least 13 million, considering the console it's on will eventuallly reach at LEAST 80 million, and it was very, very well recieved.

Top 3 favorite games: Super Mario Galaxy, The Sims 2 (PC), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

I think Galaxy will pass SM64... but not a lot!

Although it remains 5 millions, Galaxy is a "long-seller" like New Super Mario Bros.

Because, if you look the charts of NSMB, you can look that after its first year, there were 9.6 millions units sold and more DS. Today, there are 15 millions units sold and the game is selling well.

So, Super Mario Galaxy is not yet sold in bundle (not yet or never?), the game released only 8 months ago, no cut price, only one christmas...

However, SMG would pass by far SM64 if the Japan has bought SMG... because, Galaxy is not yet million-sellers in Japan, when NSMB has sold 5.5m units! And even, Mario64 sold 2m units, whereas there were less N64 than Wii...

Agreed about that last part. The fact that it sold only 1 million in Japan makes me a little skeptical. Another million from Japan would have really helped. But I still think in can reach 12 million. I mean it already passed Super Mario Sunshine total sales in less than a year!

Anyway, it seems like it will be close. We are going to have to wait and see how it sells in the coming years.

Currently Playing: Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Predictions:

Super Mario Galaxy will pass Super Mario 64 in total sales CORRECT!

Yes

lol, i can't believe they're were so many threads made about super mario galaxy being a bomb when it first came out.

on topic yes i believe it will outsell super mario 64 thanks to the wii userbase and the fact that it still sells great even now, also a lot of casual gamers who bought the wii will probably remember smb on the nes with fond memories and will buy galaxy thanks to the nostalgia factor.

nintendo and sega fan since i was old enough to hold a game controller.

note: my games collection on my profile is only 20ish% complete, i've got a boatload of 360,saturn and dreamcast games to add and a few ps3 games, thanks :)

I think it will... It's the killer app on the Wii.

ummm... I thought that was Wii Sports. (I've never heard of anyone buying a Wii so they could play SMG, but I'd be willing to bet that at least 60% of Wii owners bought it because of Wii Sports. Heck, I bought it because of Wii Sports.....

OT: ehh.... I don't really know. I don't think it will, but it's definitely not outside the realm of possibility. However, a lot depends on when SMG2 is released.

I bought my wii to play super mario galaxy. I didn't even try wii sports until I had finished SMG and Resident Evil 4.

actually, i got mario galaxy NEW for 37$ at target the day after it came out

Let's see.

Galaxy has stopped in Japan. 1.2M is probably what it will get.

SM64 sold 2M there, so SM64 will be about 750K ahead in Japan.

SM64 sold 6.84M in America.

Galaxy has sold 3.55M there atm. It's selling 15K/week right now. It's selling on par with M&S Wii right now, and I guess you don't see that one making 5M in America.

Okay, it's going to sell 8-10K/week for the rest of the year + next year, out of holiday. This means that it will probably sell 600-700K for that period.

Holiday wise, it's not going to sell more than 300K in each holiday season. 300K is a bit optimistic, but I'll say that.

This means that we're seeing somewhere around 1250K sales by start of '10. Very optimistically, 1450K so it's at 5M

After that, it could sell somewhere around 300-700K. This means that it's going to be a million short, if my calculations are correct.

In Others, SM64 sold 3.1M. Galaxy is at 2.2M atm. It's selling 15-20K/week right now. 10-12K/week untill '10 isn't unlikely. 700-800K out of holiday, and probably around 500K in the holidays.

After that, it could sell pretty much anything. It would need somewhere close to 2 million to make it. That's not going to happen.

SMG will probably end roughly 1-1.5M short. Maybe a bit more. 10M is a very good estimate.
