to some people saying BS in this thread :

@disolitude,

Even ioi said there were PS3 shortage (= 40gb shortage). It is not your poor claim "plenty of 40gb in NA" that will change it.
ioi even said that PS3 was already beyond 39k this week ...

@kowenicki,

I dont know what we are ignoring but I know what is saying ur link :

1/ PS3 AND Xbox360 follow about the same trend.
2/ PS3 is outselling the Xbox360 EVERY week except 2 weeks :
a- Xbox360 50$ clerance sales
b- Xbox360 50$ clearance sales + PS3 shortage

Pretty poor considering the AMAZING PAL offer.

Where did ioi say that PS3 was beyond 39k for the week?

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Huge shortages for a machine that for months no one wanted?

What have Sony been doing with all the machines stockpiled, melting them down to make PS2s?

no its just a console you don't want

No, llewdebkram was right. This time last year, TheSource was making statements that the PS3 has got to try and keep above 35k a week world wide.

It's actually incredible to think about how far the PS3 has come in a year. Mind you, nothing like the success of the Wii, or the 360

What the heck??? the 360's success?????

and

1,945,644 5,455,899

say "hi"

The ps2 has 100 millions of systems over the Xbox... Say hi.

The 360 will have by the end of this year the same userbase than the xbox more than 1 year before... say hi.+

Who is more success??

End of 2011 (made 02/01/11)
Wii: 99.453 m
Xbox 360: 67.837 m
Ps 3: 60.726 m

if you think the announcement of the 80 gigg has something to do with this it dosent really... it might have a little effect to people who acually research this stuff but the average consumer isnt going to know and there just going to buy whats there

Yes and no. We already had one retailer report out of the UK which they indicated the demand for the 40GB had dropped off since the annoucement was made.  Sony of course did announce to the world basically that you could get more for your money if you waited. While that may not have reached the average joe it has reached a numbers of consumers. However, this impact is not really in comparison to the overall shortages.

360? success over PS3? yeah they launched early and gained a lot of 3rd party support that was Sony exclusive but their hw sales wasn't a success in PAL and JP compared to PS3

So, what, you're saying that the 360 isn't a success, even though they've managed to mantain a lead over the PS3 for a year and a half, now - even after agressive price drop"S" from Sony's behalf! And the 360's huge software sales and attach ratio, aren't those successes, either? Or the popularity and customer satisfaction of Xbox Live?

There's only been 1 PS3 price drop.  What you're thinking of is the SKU changes.

There have been two price drops in Japan, and one in Europe/one in the States. However, SKU changes, new colours, hundreds of bundles, price drops, they all boost sales to a degree, and Sony & Microsoft have had both, but Sony have had many, many more.

At the end of the day, Sony should have killed the 360, and it didn't. That, in my book, is a success.

We saw a similar dip in 360 sales in the weeks prior to the rumored, now confirmed $50 price drop on the discontinued 20GB SKUs.

It was a good call for MS to announce the drop in conjunction with the announcement of the 60GB SKU so as to avoid cannibalizing current sales.

The average consumer is a bit savvier than some are willing to give them. Many are simply waiting for the right price point/best deal.

My only guess as to why Sony announced the 80GB upgrade so far away from its shipping date, is that 40GB stock in supply and retail channels must be near depleted, particularly since Sony claimed there will be no discount on the remaining stock.

I still see individual retailers discounting 40GB SKUs once the 80GB core SKU ships.

I just don't buy this shortage crap. Why do they have a shortage? The Wii I can understand, it's selling out of its mind. Why is it so hard to release more than a few thousand slightly modified PS3s? WTF is Sony thinking?

That's why this 360 price drop comes at a perfect time. The 80gig PS3 is now the standard, but they're not providing any units to consumers. Who's going to want to buy a 40gig PS3 when the 80gigs are coming out? So instead, they go buy a 360, which is cheaper and in wide availability. Sony...how stupid can you be!? If you're not going to provide them in wide supply, why announce it in the first place?!

Americans finally realized two things:

1.) XBox 360 is a much better gaming system than PS3.  The best games are either multiplat or exclusive to XBox, so no reason to buy a PS3.

2.) America's economy is doing horrible and more people are buying American owned products to make the our economy better.

Thats what should of happened, its actually a combination of XBox 360 price cut and PS3 switching models.
