Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox 360: Full Installation of Games to Take 10 Minutes, -30% Load Times

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6194093/index.html?tag=top_stories;title;1

One of the not-so-cosmetic changes in the fall update will be the ability to let you play your games directly from the hard disk. The new feature will let users install all of the game content directly onto the hard drive to improve game load times. Microsoft reports that it has seen a 30 percent improvement in load times in internal testing. As an interesting data point, Microsoft went out of its way to tell a group of reporters that the full Devil May Cry 4 hard disk installation took roughly 10 minutes on the Xbox 360. The installation took twice as long when we conducted our own installation tests on the PlayStation 3. Another side benefit of having games installed on the hard disk is reduced noise, since the optical disc no longer needs to spin up. However, you will still need to have the game disc in your optical drive while you're playing it, presumably as a piracy check.

Wow. Half the time it takes for the DMC4 installation on PS3, the entire thing is copied in full.
Beyond good news. That means that installing a multi-disc game isn't going to take very long. If this comes to pass, talking about whooping the PS3 in every imaginable way concerning installations & load times. This would certainly make the Xbox 360 gaming experience on certain multi-platform games the far more robust, and better experience, no?

well...since they would likely have to have an install on the ps3 anyways and the xbox time is shorter... that would seem the advantage.

Not quite.

The issue would have to do with the fact that if the PS3 version of the game didn't have forced installations, then the Xbox 360 version would (unless it was a horrid port) always load faster, and have other performance advantages.

So if the PS3 installs the game, the X360 will install faster, and possibly better (we'll see), again, if you want to do it (whereas a PS3 owner is forced to do it). If the PS3 does not have a mandatory installation, if the X360 owner wants the superior game, they can chose to have that experience.

Flexibiliy, and the option to make something better always trump a dev's sloppy foray into forcing consumers to do something like install the game to make it similar to the Xbox 360 version.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Very nice, I'm looking forward to this more than any other E3 news.

Currently playing on PS3: God of War III

Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII

Currently playing on NDS: Chrono Trigger

so their doing a rom dump onto the hard drive to speed up load times and shutup the 360 all in one hit.

but if a game is 9GB big, man that's a huge hit on the 20GB HDD

Jake -

This option really isn't designed for the 20GB X360 user. MS is goingto 60gb for the Pro models, and has the 120GB as well. It's possible that they've had this ready for quite some time, and just wanted to wait until the 60GB came onto the market.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

It's nice to finally see that there's a reason to get one of those 120GB hard drives. It's a shame they're still so prohibitvely expensive.. Think the 20GB will get phased out and they'll sell the 60GB for $100? I'd pick up one of those.

Heck, just to get rid of the stupid noise from the disk drive makes that $100 well spent. I'd love to install games to the HDD.
