Forums - Sony Discussion - PSP vs GBC watch. I say the PSP can go the distance.

It's hard to know how much the Gameboy Color sold, but before Nintendo gave the official combined total of 118 million for both the GB and GBC, I had heard ratio was 7:5.* So if that's true, then the GBC sold about 49 million units in less than four years (Oct 1998 to sometime in 2002).

Can the PSP outsell that, even if it's an unofficial number? I say it can.

Sure it will take longer than the GBC (unless it can sell 15 million units by December), but somtime in early 2010 or sooner, if there is a sales boost.

When that happens, I swear the PSP will be freaking Rocky. It will be a huge accomplishment to outsell a major Gameboy system. Sure it didn't take down Nintendo, as many predicted, but it stayed on its feet, even when it looked as though it would just fade away. Now that it has a second wind thanks to the Slim, 50 million sales in the next two years is almost assured.

Let's hope Sony sticks this out, and sees it to the end.

Go PSP!

NOTE: I admit I don't own a PSP, but I want to see it succeed, and if Namco localized the port of Tales of Eternia, and S-E localizes the Star Ocean remakes, it will certainly be on my wish list.

* The ratio makes sense to me, since the GBA had to be delayed until GBC sales slowed down so Nintendo could use the GBC processors for the GBA's backwards compatibility.

If around 50 millions for GBC is true, I'd say: Yes, easily. Only 16 millions to go.

It is unofficial, but 50 million would still be a feat.

If the sales stay at this level, for another 4 years, then yes. Unfortunately, software piracy may make that lifetime unlikely, which is why I just have the 50 million prediction.

to tell you the true , the psp sales have been steady for a while now. As long as they keep up the colors in japan, they'll be fine.

Mmmm, I thought software piracy would make the system much more successful than it would be otherwise.

@PSrock, for that to happen the PSP would need to sell an average of 225k units for the next 3 years. While it seems possible, I dont think it would, since it all depends on Japan and sales have started slowing down. Id say it settles at 180k/week avrg at least this year. If it remains like that it will take almost 4 years for it to reach 70 million, Id guess PSP would be out by then.

Its possible, but depends on Japan.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
