Forums - Gaming Discussion - Greed or sense?

Satoru Iwata said: Since their respective release dates, both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have seen significant price reductions. Wii, however, has not seen any decrease in cost and there isn't likely to be one any time soon, according to Iwata. "… we are not foreseeing the necessity for us to do a price cut in this fiscal year. If it is predetermined that the hardware price shall gradually decrease, then that model reiterates the notion that early purchasers will suffer a loss, which I do not believe is the right business model," he said. "I believe that something must be wrong if we conduct our business with the premise that we will need to cut prices of our hardware as time goes on." Personally I think this is just a sign of the incredible greed of Nintendo. As time goes on all that will happen is an increase in the profits that Nintendo is making on each console sold, and none of it would be passed on to consumers.

Companies pursue different things, and clearly Nintendo is one all about pure profit.

Baked to perfection.

All companies are about profit. They have investors and shareholders to answer to as well.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

No, Nintendo knows it still has a machine that has a shelf life of about an hour. What reason do they have to drop the price?

You don't drop the price because the console gets cheaper to make, you drop the price to get more sales. That's it.

Yes, Sony and MS lowered prices out of the goodness of their hearts, while Nintendo refuses to do so out of black hatred for gamers everywhere.

Yes, market forces have nothing to do with the situation. Nothing, I tell you.

1)  Nintendo is a business.  Of course it's about profit.  Without profit, they don't stay in business.

2)  I agree with him on the fact that early buyers get hosed.  It's called market skimming.  You get all the buyers for a particular product at the highest level and then move it down getting each new level of buyers.  Early buyers get it early but at a substantially higher cost.

Horrible Nintendo! They want to make money! We have so little, and they have so much. Greedy bastards! They should give it all away instantly!

Sony on the other hand are so nice, they are almost doomed to lose a twenty, if not more, million on the Ps3, that is a nice company my friend!

sorry if this comes out rude but grow up. Every company is about profit. Sensible companies try not to anger their customers because this hurts their ability to make more profit in the long run.

As long as the Wii is sold out dropping the price doesn't make sense.

On a different note I think it looks like incompetence that they have not been able to bring production up to demand in 18 months.

Name another console that has demand this high after 18 months, and I'll grant you the point. Otherwise, this is a prime candidate for the Wii Bingo Board v. 2.0.

Every company is about money? Pff, you guys are way off. Look at Sega vs Nintendo. A good, nice company, vs a greedy evil bastardy company.

In 2001 Nintendo and Sega were both worth 12.

In 2008 Sega is now worth about 4. Look at that nice company! They have given away lots of money! How nice of them.

In 2008 Nintendo is worth over 100! They have stolen the money from the users, and given them almost nothing in return! And still they refuse to lower the price! Damn you Nintendo! DAMN YOU!

/sigh need I comment? sure... I will bite.

Companies need profit to stay open. Its all supply and demand in this issue. Demand is still as high or higher than supply. If you lower the price the demand will increase to an even higher level, thereby further outstripping the supply... Short-sidedness is not something that business can thrive on. They know what they are doing, trust Iwata.
