Congratulation at Sony for this achievement

MY two cents. Just because Virtual Boy was very special, doesn't mean it shouldn't count. There's quite a few very special systems throughout the industry's history. It was made. It was promoted in ads. And it was put on sale in the open market. It made it though all the relevant checkpoints in becoming an actual product. I don't get the need to be philosophical about it. It was just that bad.

Well in my country its by far more popular than the other two, we even use the word "Play" instead of video games.

In Spain is very similar..., we use here "la plei (play)" for everything related to consoles.

Same over here, we say "el plei" as well (i guess "el" is the only difference), so you have friends that will ask you stuff like, "te la pasaste jugando play el fin de semana?" and even if you were playing on your PC you just answer yes, since its understood that we are just talking about video games here.

The popularity of the brand along with the fact that its shorter to say play instead of "video juegos" made it stick.

PS4 after adjustments is the best selling console of 2019 so far, which is crazy for a system that is in its 6th year.
Sure switch will end up as the best selling console of 2019 by the end of the year, but it's still amazing that PS4 managed to stay ahead for the 1st half of 2019.

Yep.... crazy sales.

Most of these are from europe + RoW.
Because if you look at the NPDs, the Switch is killing the PS4.

It just goes to show, other markets matter too.
That whole "world wide in the US" meme :)

As illogical as removing Virtua Boy because it was a dud.

It's called removing an anomaly/outlier from a data set. lol.

PSVita would be an outlier on Playstation data as well. All other numbers are from 81M PSP to 158M, so the 15M PSVita is very much an outlier.

Dude, it's basic statistics.

When something is a wrong data, sure remove the outlier. But when it very much exist, removing it doesn't make as much sense.

So is Virtual Boy a home console, handheld console or something entirely different?

It is a gaming system. For me it is a handheld that isn't very practical. Not that it matters much since Barkley used all systems he thought were relevant.

Shall we remove Switch as well because it isn't console nor HH?

Cant be a handheld as it needs to be plugged in.

Switch is both so it easily fits into the comparison.

Digital sales being over the 50% mark means more incentive for current users to stick with Sony next gen.

Indeed! This is a horn I've been blowing for a few years already. I even had a post ready to go in the Phil Spencer news article, but no matter how I worded it, it seemed a bit antagonistic, even within the framework of the existing conversation. Anyways....I'm surprised this isn't brought up more often.

Foundational: That's what this gen has been, way more than any other. Once you've begun investing in digital purchases, purchases that will carry over into the next gen, for better or worse, you begin to get locked into an ecosystem. And that's just purchases. I for example, have around 350-370 games in my library that are part of my PS+ subscription. Quite a bit to lose if I bail. That's not representative of the norm, but even having say, 50 games tied to a PS+ account is nothing to sneeze at. Then there's the "online identity" angle that Xbox and PS have been fostering, largely via achievements and trophies. I'd prefer not to lose all of that, to say the least. Bristow almost lost his shit when his account was briefly stolen a couple days ago, and I very much get where he was coming from.

As for the PS4 100 million mark:

And as I already explained:

PlayStation average of 90.6m is 5.6 times higher than the Vita sales of 16.13m

Nintendo average (including VB) of 62.3m is 80 times higher than the Virtual Boy sales of 0.77m.

Vita is 17.8% of the average, while Virtual Boy is just 1.23% of the average, making the Virtual Boy over 14 times more anomalous than the Vita. You have to draw the line somewhere, and I draw the line at 80x less than average, not 5.6x less than average.
