Forums - Gaming Discussion - Utah Man Behind Sony Online Entertainment DoS Attacks Pleads Guilty

Seen this over on resetera. Delighted for this scum bag. How dare he attack companies like Sony and go as far as call in bomb threats on flights their staff are taking. Low life scum straight from the gutter. I hope they throw the book at him. I guess the troll doesn't get the last laugh after all.

"A 23-year-old Utah man plead guilty in federal court on Tuesday and admitted to carrying out a series of denial-of-service (“DOS”) attacks in 2013 and 2014 that mainly targeted online gaming companies and servers."

"Austin Thompson committed such attacks against multiple victims between December 2013 and January 2014, including Sony Online Entertainment, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of California. Former SOE president John Smedley mentioned the attack on Twitter at the time and said it was “being dealt with.” Later that day, he said his flight was diverted for “security reasons” after an online hacking group called Lizard Squad allegedly tweeted a bomb threat at the airline."

Thompson typically used the Twitter account @DerpTrolling to announce an attack and then posted screenshots after the victims’ servers were taken down. His actions caused at least $95,000 in damages, according to the plea agreement."

Thompson’s sentencing is set for Mar. 1, 2019. He’s charged with damage to a protected computer, which has a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years supervised release."

Hope that piece of shit gets 40 years in prison. Letting blind fanboy rage drive him to such a severe crime deserves no less.

Damn, this clown ruined his life.

Harsher sentence than deserved... Assault gets one year in Utah.

Should have just fined him and given him a suspended sentence.

Depends on the result of the assault I imagine. We probably go easier on them because we could easily fill up prisons with that crime.

The claim is it caused $95K in damage and frankly you have to make an example of him to prevent more of this. It sounds like a trivial matter, but we can't have people attacking business this way.

You all should read better. He isn't sentencet yet. You have to wait until march next year to know if he gets into jail or not. I doubt he will get the max sentence of 10 years, because he pleaded guilty and this has usually a positive effect on the sentence.
