Incredible victory for the PS4!

It had no system sellers in 2015, compared to NS with Pokemon + Smash, and PS4 also had the higher price tag.

No system sellers in 2015? Did you not look at the OP? It had over twice as many games chart in NPD, had a permanent price cut and an additional black friday discount.

Also the price argument doesnt make much sense since they are devices with completely different form factors, specs and features.

How many of those games that charted are considered system sellers? I'd say only COD & MGS. Pokemon + Smash are bigger regardless.

I forgot about the temporary price cuts in 2015 though.

A steady flow of desirable medium-big games is just as, if not more, important than 1 or 2 massive system sellers.

Dying Light, Bloodborne, Battlefield: Hardline, Mortal Kombat X, Witcher 3, Batman: Arkham Knight, Madden, FIFA, NBA 2K, Destiny: Taken King, Metal Gear Solid V, Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, Fallout 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Star Wars: Battlefront, Rainbow Six: Seige.......that's a hell of a lineup for the American audience.

Arkham Knight was a system seller at  launch and they had marketing rights for it and a bundle.  And in addition to COD there was Fallout 4, which was huge, and Battlefront which was huge at launch and they once again had marketing rights and a bundle.  And in February there was Evolve and The Order which were both disappointments in quality but had really big levels of hype that contributed to very high initial sales and moved hardware.  Nearly every major month the PS4 had was accompanied by hyped up large scale releases that moved hardware.  And on top of that there were deals and pricecuts too.  You can't look much at how good games were when discussing sales.  The only thing that matters is whether it moved hardware.  And while Arkham Knight, Battlefront, Fallout 4, Evolve, and The Order were all regarded as disappointing or inferior to their predecessors, they all moved hardware.

So major upset or..?

Yes, major upset.

The only positive takeaway from this disappointing 2018 is that it makes it easier for 2019 to show solid year over year growth.

It's only disappointing in the context of extremely high expectations.  This is the second highest US year of the generation, and it was a narrow margin at that.  And Switch just had the highest December and the highest December+November period of the gen.  December was actually the biggest since I believe 2010.  The Switch had no price cuts at any time and only one 299 bundle available for a limited period.  If Nintendo can maintain performancd in this range consistently, the Switch will have a very strong lifetime sales total.  If it can go substantially above this, that would be very impressive.  But consistency would be preferable to a spike followed by steady ongoing decline.

Now I am even more disappointed because of a different reason: Your definition of generation.

I'm not even going to have this discussion here.  Generations are entirely arbitrary categorizations.  I've stated my opinion on this before, not going to repeat it here.  If you want to subscribe to the view that Switch is gen 9, be my guest.  Silly as I think thar view is.

So PS4 stays on top. To be honest, Switch sales arent that amazing considering now they are only selling 1 console now as opposed to console + handheld like previous generations. Respectable sales, but nothing to amuse about.

Only if you think tha ps4 sales aren't amazing as well because sony practically killed the vita and launch aligned sales of switch and ps4 are very similar.

That would make sense if it wasnt ahead of 3DS+Wii U in their 2nd year.

3DS 2012+Wii U 2014-5.11m

Switch 2018-5.63 million

I voted PS4. I still think Switch will become the best selling console of all time, but I think 2018 will be an anomaly year for Switch. It will lose a bit of momentum this year, but in 2019 it will shoot off like a rocket.

I was too pessimisstic for the Switch this year.  I was right the PS4 would sell more, but I thought it would beat Switch by a bigger margin.  Even in its "slow" year of 2018 Switch is still selling well.

Forgot to put Dark Souls Remastered, Dragon Ball fighters Z, minecraft and fornite, they all released on 2018 for the switch.
