Also worldwide, I'm not sure the gap will be millions. I think Nintendo at least is popular everywhere. Not to extent of Sony, mainly due to price, but enough to keep competition honest for sales.

We can get a general idea based on their shipment forcasts.

PS4 is expected to ship 11.5m from Oct-Mar while NSW is expected to ship 9.12m in the same time frame.

PS4 has averaged 2.65 million in the Jan-Mar quarter while Switch has averaged 2.54 million in its 3 non holiday quarters.

Based on that and assuming they dont miss or exceed current forcasts, we can expect shipments this quarter to be around

PS4-9 million

NSW-6.5 million

Scalpers

Scalpers sell at a higher price. If it's scalpers, why am I still seeing a price of $189 for X1S?

I’m not saying you’re wrong, and I see where you’re coming from, but there are a few things being neglected in this argument, as I see it:

1. How often does Sony parade being #1? Surprisingly infrequently. Idk about other people, but I’ve been quite surprised at how often Sony takes the chance to mention that they are not only #1 globally, but also specifically in the US. When was the last time they gave a comment on NPD? On the other hand, MS in the past has won a single NPD after a long series of losses, but takes the opportunity to announce being the “#1 console in America”.

2. See the last part of #1. If MS would have won this month/Black Friday, there’s no way they wouldn’t have blasted this from the rooftops by now. Yet we’ve heard nothing from them (unless I missed something from today).

3. Another possibility is that Sony and MS and Nintendo don’t actually know each other’s data yet. Not sure if that’s likely or not.

Hardly ever, which is why the PR surprised me.

“Demand for PlayStation 4 remains incredibly strong as it was No. 1 in sales for next-gen consoles in January, nearly doubling the nearest next-gen competitor, and remains the cumulative leader, according to today’s NPD report,” Sony spokesperson Guy Longworth said

https://venturebeat.com/2015/03/12/february-2014-npd-ps4-3ds/

Sony spokesperson said in a statement. “PS4 remains the cumulative leader in hardware sales with more than 20.2 million units sold to consumers worldwide demonstrating the fastest growth in PlayStation hardware history.”

” PlayStation brand-marketing boss Guy Longworth said. “NPD also highlighted that PlayStation sold the most total consoles and demand for Infamous: Second Son was extremely strong.”

http://www.dailytech.com/NPD+Nintendo+3DS+Outsells+Xbox+One+in+May+Sony+PS4+Beats+Both/article36064.htm

Sony released a cheery statement on the NPD numbers.  Senior Vice President of PlayStation Brand Marketing Guy Longworth commented:

PlayStation continues to be the best place to play for innovative IP, as PS4 was the preferred platform for May’s biggest releases, including Watch Dogs and Wolfenstein: The New Order, and held four of the top five spots for next gen software sales. PS4 is the leading next-gen platform for sports, highlighted in May by the best-selling sports game, MLB 14: The Show.

As usual, we don’t have unit sales specifics, but Sony claimed victory for next-gen software sales in an email, writing that the PS4 “[led] two of the top three titles” (Watch Dogs, FIFA 14) and was first in unit sales “for the sixth consecutive month.”

Sony confirmed that the PlayStation 4 was once again the top-selling console for the seventh month in a row. The company confirmed earlier this week that it has sold more than 10 million PS4s worldwide, but Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft have all declined to share specific sales numbers for July.

“PlayStation 4 was No. 1 in hardware sales for the eighth consecutive month,” PlayStation senior vice president of marketing Guy Longworth said. “And it remains the cumulative leader for new-generation game consoles.”

https://venturebeat.com/2014/10/16/september-2014-npd-ps4-outsells-xbox-one-despite-microsoft-giving-away-a-free-game/

“Thanks to the support from fans and the overwhelming popularity of the limited-edition Destiny PS4 bundle, PlayStation 4 won the month of September, with PS4 nearly tripling its August sales,” said Longworth.

Sony confirmed that the PS4 outsold the other consoles again, though NPD, Sony, and Microsoft didn’t give actual numbers on systems sold.

We’ll have to wait a little bit longer for the full June 2015 NPD report, but Sony was able to confirm that the PlayStation 4 was the #1 selling console in the United States for the month, while also leading in software sales.

Calling out the Batman: Arkham Knight PS4 bundle and its “overwhelming popularity” as a major reason for the PS4’s success last month, a Sony rep said:

PS4 continues to lead console sales in the U.S. and globally and we would like to thank gamers worldwide for their continued dedication to the PlayStation platform.

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 outsold its competition once again.

“We would like to thank our fans and partners for their ongoing support of PlayStation and for making PS4 the top selling console and No. 1 in software sales in North America in August,” a Sony spokesperson said in a statement provided to GamesBeat.

In a statement from Sony Computer Entertainment America today, they have revealed that the PS4 was not only #1 in hardware sales, but software sales as well:

As we kick off the holiday season, we would like to take a moment to thank fans for making PlayStation 4 the best-selling console and #1 in software sales in September. PlayStation 4 was the number one console for NBA 2K16, Madden NFL 16, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and FIFA 16. Including the highly successful limited edition console bundle, PS4 also led retail sales for Destiny: The Taken King.

Sony also issued a statement after the NPD report, saying they are “truly humbled by the success of the PlayStation 4,” and thanked fans “for making PlayStation 4 the top selling console globally.”

Sony marketing boss Eric Lempel made the official announcement to GamesBeat, referencing the sales report from market research firm NPD Group:

“PlayStation 4 is the top-selling console in the United States during the month of November, according to NPD. We have hit several key milestones over the last few weeks. Prior to Black Friday, we announced we have sold through more than 30.2 million PS4s to consumers around the world and that PS4 continues to exhibit the fastest growth in PlayStation hardware history. In addition, Black Friday sales were the strongest in PlayStation history demonstrating more people game now than ever before.”

As we reflect on an amazing year, we want to thank fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top selling console in December and in 2015. PS4 also had the strongest third-party software sales in 2015 in the U.S., according to NPD.

The momentum and enthusiasm for the platform continued throughout the year, resulting in cumulative sales of more than 35.9 million since the launch of PS4. During the holiday season alone, more than 5.7 million PS4s and 35 million PS4 games were sold through to consumers worldwide. We look forward to another great year and bringing an extensive portfolio of games from our publisher partners and SCE Worldwide Studios to fans in 2016.

The PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One and Wii U in January, according to Sony.

“Thanks to our fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top-selling platform and software sales leader in January, according to NPD,” a Sony spokesperson said in a statement provided to GamesBeat. “PS4 also saw impressive year-over-year growth in both hardware and software sales. The PlayStation 4 was the top-selling console of June, according to Sony. The company has come in at No. 1 every month since October 2015.

http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2016/12/09/november-2016-npd-ps4-outsells-xbox-one-first-time-since-june/

A Sony spokesperson confirmed the news with GameSpot, but they didn’t offer up a comment or give out exact sales numbers. However, Sony did confirm earlier this week that worldwide PS4 sales are now over 50 million, thanks to PS4 Pro and the biggest Black Friday week in PlayStation history.

http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2017/02/10/january-2017-npd-ps4-beats-xbox-one-had-its-best-january-ever/

Sony has revealed that PlayStation 4 was the #1 selling system of January 2017 in the United States, beating Xbox One for a third straight month, according to data from the NPD.

In a statement to GameSpot, Sony added that four of the five best-selling games during the month were for PS4. The NPD should reveal the top 10 titles of January next week, where Resident Evil 7 is likely to finish near the top.

Sony seems to have gone quiet once Nintendo started kicking its ass this year, But then again Sony never talks about being #1. Only did the PS4 starting in Jan 2014

Ur right Sony doesn't do it often. And I'm not even going to try to explain why I think Sonys statement may have been 'pr fluff'. I think Sonys doing fantastic and it's hard to get the opinion I have about it without people interpreting it as something anti-Sony, as that wasn't my intention in the first place. Sonys been killing it and I expect them to keep killing it.

as far as Microsoft releasing a pr if they win npd, yes I expect they would. But seeing as November isn't over it would be a bit confusing to the public if they announce a November 'win' while it isn't even December yet. I think if they did win it they will say something by next Monday, or Tuesday.

No, you’re good man. I’ve seen your posts, and you’re quite reasonable. Respect:) TBH, I prefer PS4 over XBO, but I think XBO will take the month. Without stock shortages, according to reports and what we saw, it seems PS4 would’ve won for sure; but XBO continued to sell well, unopposed, for just too long from Friday-Monday (or was it Thursday) online and Saturday-Monday in stores.

As for your second paragraph, I get what you’re saying, but “November” according to NPD ended 2d ago on Sunday. They could’ve simply added a disclaimer to the end of their statement such as: “November’s tracking for November ended 11/26”. But who knows. I still wonder if all 3 are ignorant to each other’s numbers

Does anyone remember how long after BF the winner for November was announced last year?

I remembered that they used to issue statements regularly in the ps4’s first couple years. I was referencing more recent times. And speaking of which, if what you listed includes every statement, then since April 2016, Sony has issued 2 statements (since that 11/2016 source wasn’t an official statement) out of 19 months. And it hasn’t been just since the Switch released; they got quieter starting 4/2016.
