I'll ask it here since I can't find the Nintendo nation thread in my buddy.

I failed one of the Chaos Emerald UFO stages, and now the bonus stage ring is transparent, and it seems I can't retry it. Are these stages only available once per playthrough, or am I missing another requirement? Can't seem to find an answer online, so I'm guessing it's something simple that most people have already figured out.
