Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Could Mario Odd. lead to a platformer resurgence?

I wish someone would make a Wreck it Ralph 3d platformer game. You could even have him interacting with humans just like the movie. That was such a great collaboration movie!

It may have the opposite effect in that every developer planning on a 3D platformer sees they'll never be able to compete with SMO and end up giving up. Mario kills platforming.

Pokoko would need to thank him.

I hope so, he needs some solid and motivated competition again.

Also caused a flush your game down the toilet resurgence,  but no one ever once to talk about that it seems.

So it also lead to a huge increase in the demand for plumbers? Knack, saving the economy one job at a time. Truly a gaming legend!

and Mario is a plumber.  So really Knack led to Mario's resurgence.  You're welcome Nintendo fans

Mario never left. He's had 3d platformers on every home console since 64. So he's not causing a resurgence in anything. 2d platformers started becoming a thing when the indie scene on XBL and PSN exploded and 3d platformers have been few and far between with Ratchet, Sly, Yooka Laylee, and Mario being the only ones I can think of in recent years.

Nah Crash Bandicoot is the cause.

As I recall Mario's return to 2D in the Wii era led to a revival of 2D platformers like DKC and Rayman. Could 3D Mario's big return have a similar effect?

Why didnt Mario's 3D games in the Wii era not led to revival?

The two GOATs this year will probably be Knack 2 and Mario Odyssey, so I say yes.

Hi

It already started before Mario Odyssey, but more 3D platformers is always a good thing. This year alone we have Yooka-Laylee, Snake Pass (Technically), Crash Bandicoot, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Lucky's Tale and A Hat in Time. Lots of games for a genre that was pretty much dead aside from Mario. There's also Psychonauts 2 next year too, seems like people always forget that game =P

I think there are a few platformers already.
Shovel Knight
Yooka laylee
Knack
Ratchet and clank reboot
Crash bandicoot
Sonic
tearaway
Might No9 (even if it wasn't good)
shantae
Rayman legends
just to namea few

I would like to see Nintendo try to really nail a 3d platformer transition for Donkey Kong, since that's yet to really happen. DK64 wasn't bad but hardly one of the better 3d platformers out there. Really trying to get DKC to work as a 3D platformer could be worthwhile.
