There was a lot of talk during 2005 and 2006 that Google would release a free operating system to combat Microsoft encroaching on their advertising business. In fact Google has already created its own Linux distribution called Goobuntu for internal use.

I think with Google Docs and their desktop search for windows they are moving in the direction of creating an OS capable of breaking into the main stream. They have plenty of money and they like to stir things up(like with the whole open cell phone bandwidth thing), so I think it is completely possible that they could launch an OS in the next year or two. It would be the perfect time since Microsoft would be very vulnerable right now since Vista sucks balls.

It would be a risky move, but with some advertising, they could grab some market share, and if the OS was quite good, (Which if it's from Google, it very well could be...) could snatch up quite a bit from Microsoft. It would be neat to see what Google would have that Macintosh or Microsoft don't have...

not sure did you guys see the download epesods on the sci chanel last month it made me hate microsft so much :)

One of the main reasons I think they will do it is because they have already taken over the search engine market and internet advertising. If they want to continue to grow then they need to break into a new area.

I actually thought about this without ever hearing any rumors. I wanted them to do this several years ago. Will they do this...? Eh, I couldn't say. But the Internetz would be very thankful if it was halfway decent. I would definitely try it out.

Same with me, I never heard rumors but I thought it would be a good idea for Google. I would build a computer to try a Google OS.  

It could be done, right now Vista aint winning customers over, I think new OS systems will enter the market and ms will lose its hold and see its market share reduced to less than 50%. Its funny how ms opersating systems have gone to pot within the same time frame of ms joing the gaming buisness.
