Forums - Politics Discussion - Philippines Pres. Duterte to sign smoking ban EO tomorrow.

MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte will sign an executive order Tuesday that will ban smoking in all public places nationwide, Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said.

In a text message, Piñol said Duterte will use the draft prepared by the Department of Health.

In January, Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial said Duterte, a long-time mayor of Davao City, had asked her to draft the executive order similar to what the city had been implementing on "100% smoke-free environment in public places."

"The executive order will actually mandate all the agencies of government, including the local government to implement this 100% smoking ban in all public places. It's not just Metro Manila," she said.

“There will be no smoking in public places anymore, whether indoor or outdoor. Parks, bus stations, and even in vehicles. All these are considered public places,” Ubial was quoted as saying.

"It's an order to the executive branch. It's up to the local government units also to draft their, shall we call, ordinances to implement this executive order. It's different from a law," she added.

The EO, Ubial said, is a clear signal to the members of the branch to implement systems and information drives to work together to be able to prevent children, the poor, and the public from smoking in public places. - with a report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News

Truly the greatest leader we have today.

Oh so he's president of the Philippines. Might have been wise to mention that for ignorant people like me.

I don't like smoking.

Thats actually dumb.Unless you are really close to the smoker, you wont inhale the smoke.
Is this on the US?

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Does it say what the punishment will be for those who violate the law? I personally don't smoke and hate cigarettes (they make me feel sick when I smell them), but I wonder if this is a way to target even more people.

Some dictators are nice.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

They'll have nice, clean lungs when his thugs pull up and start spraying bullets in the hopes of hitting some teenage pothead.

Good. That's one thing i couldnt stand abt phillipines (or SEA in general). After indonesia and phillipines, more countries in SEA should apply this law

Not sure if this is the way to solve the problem, but it might not be so dumb. Smoking costs enormous amounts for the society, so it certainly will have quite a benefit for the government. Not to mention the health benefit. That being said I'm not sure if they'll be able to stop the black market on this thing.

I applaud that. Smoking is a disgusting habit that affects those around you.

Also, it's used as a shameless excuse for work breaks that non-smokers are apparantly not entitled to. It really grinds my gears.

Far from the truth.

If someone smokes at a bus stop and then enters the bus, his clothes are still gonna carry some of the smoke/smell (happened to me on Saturday and had problems breathing) .

When someone walks and smokes and you have to walk behind them (unless you cross the street to go walk on the opposite pavement), you will inhale some of their smoke.

If you pass by someone who smokes, you will inhale their smoke.

The list goes on.

This has nothing to do with you being close to them and everything with being unable to avoid smokers no matter when you go when it is legal everywhere in public. Designated areas are much better imo.
