It's bound to happen, Nintendo will release a handheld only version of the Switch and sell it for a cheaper price than the hybrid version of the Switch; calling it the Switch Mini.

I think the "Switch Mini" will be something similar to the 2DS ($80) of the 3DS ($150) series, getting rid of the gimmick of the console and selling it for a cheaper price.

But the question is: When will Nintendo launch a "Nintendo Switch Mini"?

Side note: The 2DS launched 2.5 years after the Nintendo 3DS launched.

Holiday 2018.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

I don't think it could be any more...minimized, well it could but I'm more concerned with cooling upgrades and hardware upgrades. And of course as you said, getting rid of gimmicks. I'd opt for Switch Lite.

Holiday 2018 at the earliest, Fall 2019 at the latest.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

September 2018.

GBA, DS & 3DS all had their first revision about 1.5 years after launch.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Every Switch will be able to Switch. There's a difference between the 3D on the 3DS - a minor enhancement to existing experiences - and the Switch's ability to be on TV or handheld, which is literally the cornerstone of the design, the marketing, the brand, and everything surrounding the brand.

In fact, I don't think there will be a Switch mini but rather a Switch Pro that is more powerful, around 2020. New 3DS has been a bigger success than 2DS, though both have made some money. So I think they will want to follow up on that concept rather than the 2DS one. Also, the Switch concept is the cornerstone of the hype that surrounds it while the 3D always took a back seat to every other feature of the 3DS had and many actively complained, including medical concerns.

So no, there won't be a handheld only Switch.

Spring 2019 is my random guess

Sometime in 2047, when all the kids that grew up on it are all grown up and ready to look back on it fondly. The Joy Cons on it will suck though, and you won't be able to plug in your original Joy Cons into it because it won't actually support crappy old HDMI connections, which really breaks the nostalgic immersion.

Switch "Mini" or Switch "Pocket" is definitely happening, best guess would be end of 2018. or sometime in 2019.
