Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo Plans to Sell 35 Million Wii Consoles in U.S. by 2012

@http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&sid=aL9z9P81ssuk&refer=japan

"Nintendo Co. expects to sell as many as 35 million Wii video-game consoles in the U.S., close to the record 38.2 million PlayStation 2 players sold by Sony Corp.

The company will reach its goal by 2011 or 2012, George Harrison, marketing chief at Nintendo of America Inc., a unit of Kyoto-based Nintendo Co., said in an interview today."

IF this becomes true that means Wii would be around 90m total sales worldwide by 2012. When most of us agree this gen comes to an end. Personally I think closer to 70m. But, hey go Nintendo.

Who knows? In a way it's a rather conservative estimate, as they're saying they'll sell less than the PS2. Depending on how well the whole getting normal people to play games thing goes, they might do much better than that. Definitely going to be Nintendo's best selling home console in any case.

Gosh-darn you, RolStoppable, for posting exactly what I was going to post, but two minutes earlier! =P

I'm a Wii fan but even I think that sounds high.

"I mean, c'mon, Viva Pinata, a game with massive marketing, didn't sell worth a damn to the "sophisticated" 360 audience, despite near-universal praise--is that a sign that 360 owners are a bunch of casual ignoramuses that can't get their heads around a 'gardening' sim? Of course not. So let's please stop trying to micro-analyze one game out of hundreds and using it as the poster child for why good, non-1st party, games can't sell on Wii. (Everyone frequenting this site knows this is nonsense, and yet some of you just can't let it go because it's the only scab you have left to pick at after all your other "Wii will phail1!!1" straw men arguments have been put to the torch.)" - exindguy on Boom Blocks

Yeah. I think it is high, only because I believe the average America is a graphics whore. NOT everyone fits into that category, but that is my general assumption. Go Wii. It could happen.

Only 35 million? What a bunch of slackers. :D

It's kind of hard to make a prediction like that in just the first year of a console's life. I could see if it was the 2nd or 3rd year and they had overwhelming momentum but nobody knows yet what sales will be like when the initial big demand is finally filled and they're available on store shelves and can be found easily.

There's a thread for this in the proper forum (Sales) so let's keep this discussion there. http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=2258&start=0#end
