Forums - Gaming Discussion - Switch online requires Phone App? Why is no one talking about this?

You...actually believe, that Nintendo is being intentionally criptic? What do they have to gain by that? Why would they take all of this bad press when they can just say you can also use voice chat normally?

It is far more likely that the app just won't be ready until the Summer.

I will bet you six months of avatar control that at launch the Switch doesn't have built in in-game voice chat capability.

I dont think its intentional. I do think they are just trying to say what you get extra with the new paid online. I think we can expect things to also have what they have always had. I really do think it will have voice chat built in so you do not have to use your phone. But you can

So...are you not confident enough in your belief to take my bet?

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

I am beginning to worry about you.

Here, this is from nintendo themslves

What this tells us is that you will be able to play random online matches directly from your switch

BUT

If you want to invite friends to play online, set play appointments or set up lobbies, chat...etc YOU WILL NEED THE PHONE APP.

Basically, no matter how you want to spin this, to get the full Switch multiplayer experience, YOU WILL NEED TWO DEVICES.

All this info is directly from nintendo. They even went to the trouble of seperating them into categories so not to confuse anyone. So what are you saying?

Online Play on Nintendo Switch

You’ll be able to play compatible co-op and competitive games online by signing in with your Nintendo Account. Online play will be free for Nintendo Account holders until our paid online service launches in fall 2017.

After the free-trial period, most games will require a paid online service subscription from Nintendo in order to play online.

This service is only for Nintendo Switch. It does not affect Wii U or Nintendo 3DS systems or online play.

Planned for fall 2017

Online lobby and voice chat

Our new dedicated smart device app will connect to Nintendo Switch and let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games─all from your smart device.

A free, limited version of this app will be available for download in summer 2017.

Monthly game download

Subscribers will get to download and play a Nintendo Entertainment System™ (NES) or Super Nintendo Entertainment System™ (Super NES) game (with newly-added online play) for free for a month.

I hope you guys realize that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launches in April. That's months before Nintendo's smartphone app will be made available.

Friends lists, lobbies and matchmaking should logically all be possible without the smartphone app. Voice chat is a different story, but the idea that the smartphone app will be a requirement to play online is obviously nonsense.

I haven't seen anybody suggest that...but it looks like it will be required for making parties and talking to your friends.

Your quote doesn't say "required." Have you read the descriptions of the Playstation or XBOX apps? They use similar language, and you could assume the same thing

Where does it say the phone app is required to play online?

All it says is that it will be where you go to do matchmaking/lobby/voice chat. That doesn't mean its required to play online, just required for those specific features. Those are the more friendlist/social features, not just jumping in an playing.

Plus as Rol said, the app is still being developed and MK8Deluxe launches in April; a game that is heavily built on on-line play. It just doesn't make sense to assume the app is required for online play. It isn't. Its required for certain social features.

Oh, sorry guys. Didn't realize the OP thought it was actually required to play online. The app isn't out until the summer but the free trial starts in March, of course it's going to let you play without the app. But it won't be fully featured.

The paid online and the price tag is literally the only two things people have been talking about since the release. What universe are you living in?

Basically, if you win, you get to choose what my profile picture will be for the next six months. If I win, I get to pick yours.

Why?

1) Allows game console to focus 100% of resources on games vs OS functionality.

2) Allows customers to have a single focused UI for when playing and not playing to chat, plan, etc. Think miiverse 2.0 that is integrated into game experience as well as mobile.

3) Allows tie-in to their increasing mobile experience as well.

4) Allows seamless tie-in to 3DS or other console expereinces.

So basically, to giv you the best switch possible they require you buy a smartphone.

Thats what you are saying right?
