Forums - Gaming Discussion - Switch online requires Phone App? Why is no one talking about this?

They have not once said that there is, or will be any other way to do voice chat on the Switch. You don't think that with all the negative press they've gotten over this they would have clarified by now?

They want you to think. If the app isnt avail until summer. What could you use before then? The same things that are always avail. They are just trying to talk about new things as to there paid online

You...actually believe, that Nintendo is being intentionally criptic? What do they have to gain by that? Why would they take all of this bad press when they can just say you can also use voice chat normally?

It is far more likely that the app just won't be ready until the Summer.

I will bet you six months of avatar control that at launch the Switch doesn't have built in in-game voice chat capability.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Seriously why are we assuming that meant that was the only option. Clearly not what it was saying

When he says "the phone app is how you'll voice chat, do your matchmaking and create your lobby", it clearly indicates that the phone app is needed for that, which is consistent with every other announcement about it: every time they talk about the online, they talk about this app.

Pretty sure the app is only used when away from home since there is no cell capabilities. At home, you won't use it.

I dont think its intentional. I do think they are just trying to say what you get extra with the new paid online. I think we can expect things to also have what they have always had. I really do think it will have voice chat built in so you do not have to use your phone. But you can

It doesn't "require" the phone app. Its an added feature if you want to control a friends list or voice chat, etc. If you just jump on to play a game, then you just do that without the phone app. I'm not even sure how you pulled that it is required out of any of the information that has come out so far.

But why does that option even exist? Everything you can do on the phone is easier and faster done with the Switch itself.

That's like adding an option to play with the Switch while the joycons are heated up to 500°C. It's not mandatory, just an option for people who think having 500°C hot Joycons is more convenient.

Why?

1) Allows game console to focus 100% of resources on games vs OS functionality.

2) Allows customers to have a single focused UI for when playing and not playing to chat, plan, etc. Think miiverse 2.0 that is integrated into game experience as well as mobile.

3) Allows tie-in to their increasing mobile experience as well.

4) Allows seamless tie-in to 3DS or other console expereinces.

I think it's a jab towards you, but who knws what's rational in this world anymore?

In case you havent noticed the problem that bothers everyone else:

"The smart phone app that we’re creating, that will be part of our online service, we believe is going to be a very compelling part of the overall proposition because that’s how you’ll voice chat"

I haven't seen anybody suggest that...but it looks like it will be required for making parties and talking to your friends.

"Online lobby and voice chat

Our new dedicated smart device app will connect to Nintendo Switch and let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games─all from your smart device.

A free, limited version of this app will be available for download in summer 2017."

Uuuuhhh...

"that not only will capture the multiplayer opportunity, but also the voice chat capability that we’re going to provide through a global app."

It's not built into the system.

Fucking stupid, right?

Where does it say the phone app is required to play online?

All it says is that it will be where you go to do matchmaking/lobby/voice chat. That doesn't mean its required to play online, just required for those specific features. Those are the more friendlist/social features, not just jumping in an playing.

Plus as Rol said, the app is still being developed and MK8Deluxe launches in April; a game that is heavily built on on-line play. It just doesn't make sense to assume the app is required for online play. It isn't. Its required for certain social features.

Still trying to apply logic to the Switch I see.
