Forums - Sales Discussion - PS4 vs 3DS Hardware Sales

PS4: 49m

3DS: 62m

Gap: 13m

Vgchartz home page ain't loading so I can't grab the 3DS or ps4 numbers.  I'll update with the numbers.

3DS is the top selling console this gen when you included home and handhelds.  PS4 which released much later is catching up rapidly.  As it's getting the #1 spot in sight I'm creating this thread to keep track of the progress.

This is only for hardware as ps4 is already the top dog in software which I estimate sales to already be around 400m+.

Ps4 isn't aiming for the Wii.  It's aiming for the ps1 to become the second highest selling home console ever and to give Sony the top 3 spots on that list!

Handhelds always have an advantage of selling more because usually in a house hold you would need multiple handheld consoles if you have a few kids or perhaps like me i own one, my gf owns one and so does her brother. Thats three handhelds in one house! Yet for a home console is more common to share and have one in the lounge that the whole family shares.

I where am i heading with this? I think its more impressive when a home console sells more as i believe that its at a disadvantage

Great point.

They also get broken by the kids easier and have to be replaced by the parents more often.  My family years ago and my cousins family went through a lot of DS's

They're also usually launched for $100+ cheaper ($150 gap between PS4 and 3DS, $230 if you count the price cut it got early on), they're games are usually cheaper, and they appeal more to casuals.  Granted, the casual appeal has diminished greatly this gen, but it's still there to some degree.

@ OP

It'll b interesting to see how much longer it takes to outsell the 3DS.  My guess is it should do it by the end of this year. Then maybe a 1 1/2-2 years after that to pass 100M.

I remember there was a thread like 3 years ago and some people said it would never catch it (too lazy to search anyway)

I wonder how much the gap shrinked after the holidays (we know ps4 was at 53.5 or something like that, qo I guess it's maybe 11 million gap?)
