Do I need to play the first to understand the plot, or is the sequel a Stand Alone?

More than likely a standalone sequel but will have aspects and easter eggs from the first game.
You should try the first game, its worth the price for it is now.
Gameplay is a bit eh but story, presentation, etc is fantastic. |
I heard some character talk about Ding Dong Dell though, a huge part of the first game. Also heard the main theme from the first game as well. I think they'll be a bit more connected than we think.
By the trailer, it seems like they are abandoning the monster catching mechanic of the first one.Or they simply ddint show the monsters fighting.
Personally I think its a better choice, since it gives more focus to the carachters. But its Ni No Kuni. Its going to be excellent either way
My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I'm sooooooooo hyped for this.
The battle system seems different from the one in the first game...for some that could be seen as a good thing, personally I enjoyed the battle system in the first game even with its problems. Also no signs of familiars?
I like it already, the music won me over.
I gotta say, I was really impressed with what I saw here on Ni No Kuni 2. It is def a game I'd love to play some day. Love the character designs as well.
Dance my pretties!
