I know what it's for, I'm saying it's a shaky idea. Hypothetically, if I merely wanted to hide the screen, I could have also simply layed it upside-down on my table.

you clearly doesn't understand the point of the dock ... I'm going to explain just one last time, THEY decided to hide the screen when it's plugged in the TV, that has nothing to do with you or what you want.
The Switch needs to plugged in the TV, it's not wireless, the dock connects to the switch through a usb type C plug, the USB type C does everything in one, charging and sending the signal to the TV.
So when it is plugged to the TV, the screen is shut down, it can't be used, and Nintendo wanted that to be really clear to everybody, so the dock hides the screen.
