Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo: Switch is a home gaming system ‘first and foremost’

While the Nintendo Switch is designed for play both in the home and on the go, Nintendo wants to be clear that it’s a home system first.

“Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system first and foremost,” the company told Polygon when asked if the system was going to impact the sale of the 3DS portable systems. “We have made no announcement regarding the future of Nintendo 3DS.

“Obviously with sales of almost 60 million 3DS portables worldwide, there’s still a huge hunger for new games, such as Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. There are many more games in the pipeline.”

While the answer seems to be Nintendo equivocating a bit in terms of the lifespan of the 3DS, it’s pretty easy to interpret the plans for the Wii U.

“Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system first and foremost”

“We have nothing to announce about the production status of Wii U,” Nintendo said in response to our request. “We announced in April 2016 that as we prepare for the launch of Nintendo Switch in March of 2017, Nintendo will ship 800,000 Wii U hardware units to the global market for this fiscal year. As a result, the inventory of Wii U hardware at retail will become harder to find.

“We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.”

The Nintendo Switch was unveiled this morning in a video that showed the console’s transformable controller and ability to travel for on-the-go gaming.

Wii U is dead and 3DS will be on market at least next year too, it seems that Nintendo want to position Switch more like home console and replacement for Wii U but not like competition to 3DS.

But from the preview... it's clearly more of a handheld...

Thought it looked more like a tablet 1st, home console 2nd.

Nintendo marketing strikes again.

It would be much wiser to emphasize the portability of the system and its handheld capabilities, I think. Head to head against the other "home consoles" it looks rather underpowered, especially against the Pro and eventually the Scorpio.

If they ever decide to release a traditional box and controller version of Switch I will buy one.

If they do a 3DS2 after they just released a tablet based homeconsole..... then *face palm*.

This guy has to be lieing or talking out of his arse... there no way they could make a mistake like that.

This is it.... the Nintendo Switch is obviously a replacement for the 3DS as well.

It sounds like this is the traditional box.... whats in question is if they do a replacement for the 3ds.

Which would be a huge mistake after the Switch has a tablet for playing on the go.

They really showed of the mobile part of it :p

The Switch is a Wii U replacement at first, then will replace the 3DS soon

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

And this is where it all crashes down. Nintendo if you want this thing to sell it has to be sold as the successor to both WiiU and 3DS. Stop playing it safe, dont allow people to believe your working on a potential new handheld if Switch is a bust.
