Forums - Sales Discussion - Tomb Raider (X360) VS Rise of the Tomb Raider (XOne) - This is why launch dates can be misleading.

Point number 1

As you all can see Tomb Raider has almost identical legs with both versions. What it means is that the difference between two platforms starts to show after 10-15 weeks, however the gap takes a status quo position after the first holiday season.

Point number 2 (and this is a major one)

Tomb Raider on Xbox 360 is selling on par with Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One, or is it? One important thing that you might have missed is the holiday bump which is going to boost Tomb Raider on X360 by about 300,000 units sold.

Why is this important you may ask?

As you may have noticed this is a cumulative sales comparison, but the launch dates of TR and ROTTR vary greatly, what this means is that ROTTR won't be receiving a holiday boost in another ten weeks on this chart since it basically launched into the holiday season last year.

Keep in mind that when the bump eventually comes it won't have as much effect because it is the second holiday season for ROTTR while the huge bumb for TR is the game's first holiday season due to its Q1 release back in 2013.

And this is why release dates do matter when comparing how fast the games in comparison are selling.

So in the end ROTTR is NOT selling at similar pace to TR (X360) at all.

Now discuss...

I guess we will see eventually. Sure looks like it's destined to fall behind. It will also be interesting to see if the PS4 release boosts the X1 release.

I didn't realize that there were people who thought ROTR on Xbox One was doing as well as TR did on 360. That's interesting because as you said, it won't get the holiday boost that TR got.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Maybe Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics will see this and decide to go old school like the PS1 Tomb Raider days! Yeah and maybe Meteor will destroy all life on the planet.

A few things...

RotTR also launched on 360 and its a good port. It accounts for about 400K of physical sales.

Digital sales wasnt as relevant in 2013. In fact, TR2013 wasnt available digitally at launch on 360. So youre comparing physical only launch to physical/crossplat/digital launch.

Hence, its RotTR on 360, X1, plus digital numbers VS TR2013 on 360 and physical only at launch.

Circumstances are very different between the launches of both titles. We dont have all the numbers so this thread doesent show the whole picture.

Exactly.

I'm not taking anything away from ROTTR, just explaining why for example your statement that ROTTR is selling at the same pace as TR (X360) is misleading.

And one other thing: it is ROTTR on XONE VS TR2013 on X360, I'm not taking into account other version sales because that's not the point. Also your claims that digital is now significantly more popular than 2,5 years ago is questionable (Steam is now how old? 12 years? PSN almost 10 years and Xbox Live even more.) but a topic for a different discussion.

The point is: that we will see a sudden rise in favor of TR2013 because of the holiday season bumb while ROTTR won't because it used up that advantage already.

The whole reason I'm comparing those cumulative sales with these titles on these platforms is because if you only look at the numbers and what each title had sold at this time, it would seem that ROTTR on XONE would have identical sales all the time compared to TR2013.

Anyways thanks for the inspiration for this topic.

It could give a minor boost, however it is now officially the inferior package so it's like Ninja Gaiden 2 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2.

I guess old school PS1 nostalgia works as a meteor magnet then?

If so I better invest in a helmet

Again, you're neglecting digital sales are more relevant now on consoles then just a few years ago. As I stated before, TR2013 didn't launch digitally on the 360. It came months later. $60 games are now big numbers digitally and all are launching on day one. It possible RotTR sold a couple hundred thousand units digitally when you consider more popular games like Halo 5 and Uncharted 4 may have sold over a million digitally.

Simply for comparision sake you should have noted crossplat sales of RotTR are way above TR2013 on 360 alone. Worth noting given both of those versions launched the same day.

But how much more relevant are they? It's pure speculation and it's not like TR 2013 didn't sell anything digitally after it became available digitally, and it also has been available digitally for almost two years longer, also I am NOT comparing ROTTR all platform sales VS TR2013 X360, it is not the point of this topic.

I am discussing how TR2013 on Xbox 360 is not selling at the same pace as ROTTR on Xbox One in the long run and how deceiving it can be if you don't take the first holiday sales into consideration.

Please don't use digital sales as a shield when those numbers are just pure speculation, who knows how much TR2013 has sold in digital...
