Forums - Politics Discussion - Police circulate picture of wrong man after Dallas shooting.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/07/08/during-deadly-dallas-shooting-confusion-swirled-around-armed-man-carrying-a-rifle/

So, turns out that the picture of the "suspect" that was going around after the shooting in Dallas was actually just a protester who happened to have a gun.

The Dallas PD posted his picture on Twitter as part of a Tweet that said "This is one of our suspects. Pleaste help us find him!" He has since recieved thousands of death threats.

They could have gotten this guy killed, and they haven't even apologized yet...

The police department continues to screw up

... would love to see Barack Obama give the police departments in America a much needed change. Just too many issues to not do anything at all.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that it was a really frantic time and information was flowing in very quickly. But they needed to take a second and think about what they were doing here, and what the consiquences might be.

*facepalm

The guy was walking around with an AR-15 when a bunch of people were shot to death.

Yeah, they should have been a lot more casual and laid back about it. Maybe they could have played some Pokemon Go while they waited for the murderer to turn themselves in.

It's been a gosh darn day people, they were hunting for a shooter who killed 4 cops, 1 DART, wounded 7 others, and wounded multiplease protesters. Yes, he wasn't the guy but he was a suspect at the time, they were just trying to find him. With the shooter dead, all this death threat nonsense will stop. My word they run out and get gunned down protecting civilians and people's first response is to flip because they posted a photo of a suspect who just happened to not be the right guy and haven't apologized in the, what, 13 hour span? Good lord people, have some cocking patience.

He turned his gun into the police right after the shooting started. Before that picture of him was posted even.

As I said in a earlier post, I understand that things were hectic. But they could have gotten him killed.

Yes, they were wrong, but this is NOT outrage worthy.  People saying this is proof American cops are incompetent and even saying it proves they don't want to protect, they'really just power tripping, bloodthirsty thugs are being highly disrespectful and also not taking into consideration the speed with which this manhunt had to move.  A guy had just fired a high powered rifle into a peaceful protest, that's a serious, serious threat to the police and the public.  And they had a narrow window before he disappeared into the wood work.  The fact is the guy ISN'T dead and the whole thing lasted less than 24 hours.  You can criticize their zeal if you want but they got the right guy and they got him darn quick.

When they posted that picture, he had already spoken to a police officer and had handed over his gun.

They also called him a suspect, not a person of interest. There is a very big difference and he wouldn't have even been a person of interest had the police communicated properly.

The long and short of it is that they fucked up and put an innocent civilian in very real danger.

Information doesn't travel instanty.  This all went down in less than a day.  And the odds he would have been killed were pretty darn slim, irregardless of all the vitriol online (if death threats online came to fruition frequently, TotalBiscuit would be dead long ago :P).  The officer or employee who posted that only knew that multiple witnesses at the protest saw him there with a weapon of the type used *in the shooting*.  It was a snap decision to ask the public for information.  You can't require cops or anyone to act on knowledge you have NOW with the benefit of hindsight.  This is, frankly, a PERFECT example of the kinds of minor hiccups that will happen from time to time for which the Police should not be tar and feathered.  5 cops died in the line of duty protecting people - both civilians and fellow cops - and the first thing, the VERY first thing people try to do is show how, despite that sacrifice and resolving this in under a day the police are reckless and incompetent.
